New Video exports for QuickTime coming for iPad?

Wow 720/30p! Never thought apple would offer that...maybe they can get their act together and make an apple tv capable of this.

Or just ship a software update that enables it. 1280x720/30 FPS @ 5 Mbps is doable on the current hardware.

If you have a hacked Apple TV, you can try it for yourself.

However, I’m not sure what the difference between “Progressive Main profile” and just “Main profile” is. One may be more GPU/processor intensive to decode than the other.

Maybe Dynaflash or nightstrm will chime in on this discussion.

Current atv can do High Profile in stock form. The specs on apples site are way low imo.

From one of many atv encodes I have done with HB for the Atv:

Looks like a pretty easy task for Handbrake.

Very easy, basically for starters you can just run the existing atv preset. Though scale up to 720p since it will not have the 540p at 30 fps limitation the atv has. Current Atv Preset plays on the existing 3G iPod touch so should be no problem at all for the iPad.

I have run 720p at 30 fps on an atv. It works fine unhacked, due to gpu decoding. Wouldn't be surprised if an iTunes update for the iPad also lets 720p @ 30 fps transfer to atv as well. Otoh, who knows what apple will do.

That would be nice for my EyeTV OTA encodes! No more 1080i or 720p shrunk down to 540p because of the 24FPS limitation.

If the content is 1080i, such as NBC, you can export a MPEG Program Stream which preserves the original file with 5.1. Then run this through handbrake with the detelecine filter on, fps set to 23.98, and size at 1280x720.

This does not work for 720p though (fox/abc) as the pulldown isn't recognized correctly.

I never understood the lack of 720p30 on the Apple TV. It was a very stupid decision from day one. What's more pathetic is that it's been over 3 years without a hardware update.

I also imagine that the iPad is capable of 1080p playback since the iPhone is, it's just not enabled.
