Hey y'all.

I'm on Mac OS Tahoe 26.0.1.

The size and placement of the volume and screen brightness indicators stresses me out, badly!

They appear in that top-right area of our screens now, in roughly the same place that other notifications appear, like an incoming imessage notification.

So I'm just looking for some camaraderie: when I change the volume, my brain gets the sensation that I'm being notified of something. Then the volume indicator disappears, which then makes my brain think that it didn't read the notification and I missed something. I feel like I have to double check that I didn't miss a banner about something important.

It generates anxiety in my mind and body, that's all. Anyone else feeling disturbed by that? Is there anything we can do about the placement of the screen brightness and volume change indicators? Make them appear in the bottom center of the screen, like in previous Mac OS versions?

I understand that you're looking for camraderie and while your reason for not liking where the indicators have moved to is valid, and bogdanw's link seems like it solves the issue, if notifications are causing you so much distress that thinking one is coming in (as you change the brightness or volume) then you may need to talk to someone.

No offense intended, and maybe I misunderstood the tone, but feeling physical anxiety in response to a potential notification is extreme.

I am highly attuned to the notification banners by necessity -- volume and screen brightness change indicators shouldn't be active in the same area as notification banners. It's bad user interface design. But, then again, most of y'all are saying I'm the problem. Duly noted.

Also, kinda funny, the app maker that bogdanw mentioned includes the following line, "even after months on the Tahoe beta, I still haven't gotten used to it. It's bad UI." So yea. It's not just me. That's the camaraderie I'm looking for. Thanks.

Yes, I can relate to this.

It's like an itch that lessens and then increases, constantly.

Who are we to judge what might be noticed by or triggers another person?
I have misophonia, some sounds bother me in ways that vast majority of people might not be able to fathom.
The new notifications are annoying.

Ha... Well, sure. I'm out a lot, but more is always good. Still, isn't this a place -- a forum -- for having genuine conversation about our operating system though? Especially since conversations are mostly about the theme of liquid glass right now, and not much around this change in OS behavior that diverges from decades of consistency. I think it's worth having a discussion about.
The volume and brightness control placement is the LEAST of iOS 26 issues. That ahouldn’t even register in the grand scheme of things.

Agree with you as well. If they were the most agregious change in Tahoe, I (and probably everyone else) would be absolutely ecstatic. But I suspect for most people it's #99 on the top 100 list of things that tick us off.

I was mainly talking about this part of your post, not disliking the placement. Anyway, if it's not causing you distress or impacting your enjoyment of daily life then I was wrong.

Hey, I didn't mean to judge them as if they're doing something wrong, rather that if a notification system drives up anxiety to the point where it's physically impactful to the point then it is likely indicative of a bigger problem, related to anxiety or not. I also have misophonia (gum chewing sounds and those old Hardees/Carl's Jr commercials drive me nuts), but it's manageable and doesn't cause me physical and mental anxiety.

Oh, so you chose to diagnose someone else while also bragging that your experience with misophonia isn't as bad for you as it may be for others?

For shame. You'd think you'd know better that not everyone's experiences are the same,

Hey everyone, just to clarify; I wasn’t trying to dismiss or minimize anyone’s struggles. Anxiety sucks, and I don't wish that on anybody. My point was only that I didn’t want the OP to have to suffer over something like this, not to judge them for how they react. Hence:

...if it's not causing you distress or impacting your enjoyment of daily life then I was wrong.

I get that tone can come across differently online, but I’m trying to engage in good faith. In that same strain, I'll disengage here.

Well I think it's dumb to put the volume indicator way up in the upper right corner when I change the volume with my keyboard, which is way down here. Maybe that's fine on a macbook, but I have a 27" monitor.

But Tahoe is gonna Tahoe.

Bug or feature? :)
"Volume/brightness HUD not visible when Ice is running on macOS Tahoe"
https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice/issues/719
This happens only when sound volume icon is set to be hidden in Ice. If icon is set to be hidden in System settings (either set to not be displayed or displayed only when active), then volume control popup should work normally.

It probably does not happen with brightness popup because brightness control icon is typically not in menu bar at all.

I appreciate seeing the volume/brightness adjustments in the top right of my screen, especially when watching content in full screen.

I can live with the volume and brightness indicators being moved, and at the moment I'd also prefer the old style, centered on the screen. However, the low battery pop-up, which appears every time it drops 1% and is nearly impossible to close, is really bothering me.

oh my, the low battery pop-up is insane! who the heck thought that was a good idea!?
