Newbi needs help.. (video playback lacks picture)

So I just bought this 14" Ibook G4 and it's awsome from what I can tell. I have one problem though. Being a LONG time PC user I am used to being able to play Avi files so thats all i have is Avi. Now I have downloaded Divx codec and Wmv codec from this site and a few other things from other sites. I can play the video but I only get sound I don't get a picture. I am at a loss I called customer support and they didn't help to much just told me I need to find a codec.... ok... can someone help me?

Just download a program called VLC - has taken any video I've thrown at it and has the advantage of not looking at region coding when playing DVD's.

Unless you've mistakenly used up your 5 switches, in which case VLC will only play the region your drive is locked to, sigh...
