hi all, I have browsed around here before messaging but its all too confusing.
yesterday i have purchased an iphone 3GS at the apple shop in sydney, australia. As excited i was i quickly unwrapped/unboxed everything and plugged it in and sync-ed it to my itunes - I had also upgraded it to 3.1.2.

Afterwards i tried to jailbreak the phone using pwnagetools but when the processes finished, i tried to install an app but it wouldn't install - with rather generic error message poping up. I then browsed around here and realized that 3.1.2 can't be jailbreaked yet? (the modem firmware is 05.11.07 - i purchased it at the apple shop, and they say i don't need to unlock it?)... I then heard that downgrading could work but 3.1.2 isn't downgradable unless there is some SHSH (or something) cached onto some server?

is there any other way for me to jailbreak the phone, or would i need to wait for the dev. to work it? ... im completely new to the iphone -____-

It is not true that all 3GSes can't be jailbroken. Whether your phone can depends on what version of iBoot you have. If you have the new version 359.3.2, you cannot use current tools to jailbreak. But there is a good chance that you do not. There is information on finding your bootloader version here.

If you have 6.1 or some other boot loader, you can jailbreak using current tools and should post more details about exactly what steps you took, what the results were, etc. "Generic error message" is not adequate.

Even if you do have 359.3.2, that doesn't mean you will never be able to jailbreak again. The Dev Team will continue to look for new exploits.

Read what he said. He has Jailbroken.

The baseband is nothing to do with Jailbreaking. If you read, you would understand baseband is for unlocking.

If you can't install any Apps, I recommend you restore and re-Jailbreak. Maybe try Blackra1n, it's a little more... simple.

Maybe OP tried to install a cracked app without first installing the hack that allows them to be installed?

hi, thanks for the reply. I have tried to check which bootloader version i have, but whilst following the guide provided - up to the part where i need to change my ip address to the iphone's ip... it says connection lost/refused?...but i haven't touched anything thats to do with the bootloader... just updated to 3.1.2 firmware.

... so i have restored my iphone back to defaults at 3.1.2 and retried jailbreaking using blackra1n-installed cyria and icy, following the guide http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5566. but when i try and send a app i installed, i get the following error message
"the application "Tap Tap" was not installed on the iphone 'user's Iphone" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8008001).

any ideas how to get it to properly install?.. thanks!

Did you authorize your computer with your iTunes account? Was this app purchased/downloaded using that account?

Or, to put it another way, did you try syncing apps to your iPhone *before* you jailbroke? Because this issue could be totally unrelated to jailbreaking, since it relates to official apps available through the App Store.

i think i know what your problem is...
did you install that app legally through itunes store or from some third party websites? this is the key question

If you are using windows try the following and assuming you do not have the updated boot rom

1. restore to the official apple 3.1.2
2. jailbreak using blackra1n (you may need to try a couple computers it get it to work)
3. once jailbroken using blackra1n go ahead and restore using the custom ipsw.

i got it working!! .. i was missing appsync from cydia T__T ... iclarified - didn't add that at the end of there tutorials.. which is very misleading since new iphone users like myself would think thats the end of the jailbreaking process (should include that somewhere) .. ah wells

thanks for the input and help!

That would be because the people at iclarified (as well as the mods at this forum) don't approve of people installing apps they didn't pay for. Appsync *isn't* part of the jailbreaking process, it's an additional thing some people chose to do after they jailbreak.

It would have been helpful if you told us you weren't having problems with Jailbreaking, but problems WITH ILLEGALLY INSTALLING APPS.

Thanks for wasting everyone's time. And breaking the rules.

Do us a favour, and never ask for help again. Because you wont be getting any from me. Not because you were breaking the rules, but because you were trying to get us to help you pirate instead of helping you to Jailbreak. Not cool.
