Brand new to Mac and will be switching over in a few days. Here are my questions:

-I have an account through SBC where I could pick-up an eMail address. I would prefer a mac.com address but don't want to purchase the .Mac service for $99/yr. I will be using Entourage for mail.

Can I get a mac.com email address without purchasing .Mac that will work with Entourage? Thanks.

I am pretty sure that you cannot. You could always use a gmail account which lets you store 2 gigs of stuff. I know it lacks the .mac that you may have been looking for but i know Gmail works with the Mail program. Check out Mail on your new Mac you may like it better then Entourage.

Duff-Man says...as is clearly stated on Apple's .mac pages, there are no "email only" .mac accounts. The only way for you to get a .mac address without the whole .mac package is if you know someone else with .mac and get them to add another email account to their account (which costs extra...)....oh yeah!

I would want to use Entourage for the calendar and Exchange server capability.

Am also thinking about the extended support program, but with that and the .Mac you are talking an extra $300  I beginning to find out that switching to Mac is an expensive proposition.

You can make your .Mac address anything. I chose something that was completely irrelevant for my account name.

The only way to get .Mac is to actually buy it, (the $100) find someone who is a memeber and will support you by an e-mail only account, that is $10 a year, or you can try the free trial that lasts 60 days, but once that's done, the only functional part of .Mac is the iChat name in the trial.

If you can afford .Mac (which it sounds like you can't) then don't buy it. I tell people to only get .Mac if they have the money and if they actually will use all of the features.

I would use Gmail. I've heard it's rather good. I wouldn't get anything from Yahoo! or AOL because I have tried and heard from some people that you get too much spam from Yahoo! and AOL.

I think all of these are considered POP3 accounts. In laymen's terms, these will all work with any mail application, whether it's Outlook, Navigator, Mail, Entourage, etc.

Also, switching to a Mac has never been easier! I hate to sound preachy, but here we go. Compatibility issues are never a problem as I have seemlessly shared all sorts of files easily with Windows people. I live, work, and talk to people who all have Macs except for three people and I haven't had any problems.
Also, don't buy the extended warranty or AppleCare. People tell you to get it, but a 1 year warranty is good for me and I've only had to replace one of many Apple products in my lifetime and I found out later on that I didn't have to replace it.

Welcome!

whoa, wait...
Gmail works with the mail program?
I tried that on my computer and it wouldn't work...is there something special you have to do?

Gmail work well with Apple Mail. Either you had not enable POP in your Gmail account or you did not configure your Mail properly. Here's the configuration instruction for your reference.

You can find .Mac for as little as $69. Many threads on MR regarding whether it's worth it or not. I just re-upped and like it.

As for AppleCare, you can delay it's purchase until the computer is just under a year old. I recommend it for laptops and any Mac with a big screen. You may never need it but if you do, will be one of the best purchases ever made.

one more question...

I set up apple mail to work with my gmail, and it works great....
However, my apple mail not only receives messages from other people, but it also gets copies of the messages that I send from my gmail account.
I use my mac at home, but in the office, I have a different computer and oftentimes I'll send messages from the actual gmail account.
When I got home today, and I checked my apple mail, I had a TON of messages in my inbox, all of which were from me that I had sent earlier from the same account...
I've looked at all the preferences for both gmail and apple mail, and I can't seem to disable this...
did I do something wrong?

For some unknown reason, there isn't an option for you 'to disable forwarding your sent messages back to your inbox.'

Have you tried auto forwarding instead of POP?
