I've had my mac for a couple of months now but have had nothing but problems with fonts on it. I got some fonts from a designer I work with, but Microsoft office says half of them are corrupt and I should take them out. But when I look in Font book it doesn't have the fonts there. I don't know where the fonts are to delete off. I can't open any of the Office programs without it sorting through the fonts and rejecting them. I also have problems with the fonts in Quark Xpress. When I convert them using Acrobat Distiller it says the fonts are not available.

I also have a problem at the moment with it going into sleep mode and disconnecting from the internet. I'll be in the middle of working and it'll just go to sleep and I'll have to start it again, but it'll carry on going back to sleep till I eventually manage to close everything down and reboot the computer.

Final problem. A friend of mine has a problem with the Safari icon continously bouncing. She has tried everything to stop it, but no one can work out why it does it.

If anyone can help with these problems it'll be gratefully received! :D

To start, you may need a font manager other than fontbook. I suspect this is causing your problems. http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX http://www.extensis.com/ and get those fonts under control. They can cause all sorts of problems.

Hi ibaza ....

For your sleep problems I recommend these steps ...

1. Start up in Safe Mode .. this will run the "Repair Disk" utility.
Be sure the computer is turned off.
Now press the power button.
Just after you hear the startup tone (NOT BEFORE), press and hold down
the shift key.

Now release the shift key when you see the start up screen with the gray
background with the Apple logo and the progress indicator.

During the startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

2. While you are in Safe Mode ... Repair Permissions .. Remember to do this Before & After any System Update Close all open files and applications. Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and double click it. Then select "Macintosh HD" in the left panel and First Aid at the top. Then click on "Repair Permissions."

To leave the Mac OS X Safe Mode just restart your Mac normally, without
holding any keys during the startup period.

3. Quit System Preferences if it is open and Trash these Prefs
Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
com.apple.autowake/plist (if available)

Empty trash ...

If these don't solve your sleep problem let me know and we'll go into more detail ...

For trouble free Sleep Operation ..
Try these energy saver settings ..
System Preferences/Energy Saver

Set the "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at "Never"
Set display sleep slider where you wish... then ...
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".

This Way Everything sleeps but the CPU

Your friend can pull the safari icon off the dock ... then go to HD/applications and drag safari to the dock where it will build another icon ... or click once on safari to highlight it ... go up to "File" .. "make alias" and then drag the alias over to the dock ...see if that helps.

Cheers ...

Thanks for your help. My mac doesn't seem to be going to sleep anymore which is great!

The fonts seem to be sorted as well.

Ok so it didn't work! I thought that it had been sorted but today I was trying to save a DVD and it went into sleep mode about every 5 minutes! I was using Toast to save the dvd but I've only just had Toast so it's not from that, but I was saving an album with iTunes the other day and it happened as well.

Are you using a Mac Mini?

Yeah, give us your basic hardware and software info including any external devices you added

e.g.

iMac intel 2.1 ghz
1 gig of ram
120 gig hard drive with 40 gigs free
external 300 gb usb2 lacie drive
OS 10.4.6

Also, if you did anything let's say "extra-legal" with regards to software then tell us about it now (in a discreet manner) because those types of things can really monkey around with your system.

Sounds like it may be overheating. I think at least some Macs go to sleep as a way of protecting it from damage due to overheating.

What kind of Mac is it and is there anything out of the ordinary that could cause it to overheat except for the CPU going full throttle? What's the air temperature where it's located?

Good point gekko513, open up Activity Monitor when you're doing the things that make the Mac fall asleep and watch the cpu and hard disk activity levels. If anything seems to stay at really high levels for a long time then that may be your culprit.

I'm having trouble with corrupt fonts as well. I downloaded the linotype program, and it asks me if I want to have it manage by copying or by moving fonts. Which is best? If I just have it copy the fonts, and fix the corrupted fonts in the new program, will the copies still residing in FontBook still be corrupt?

It also asks me which folders to copy or move the fonts from. Is there one folder somewhere that contains them all?

Sorry for the n00b questions, I've felt it was wise never to mess with my fonts, since I don't know anything about them, but recently I've had to install a few new ones for some Chinese programs I have, and it seems to have messed things up.

Edit: Sorry for hijacking the thread, I got carried away

Here is the hardware overview:
Machine Name: iMac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac12,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 2.1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 700 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.6f1

I have some programs for design work like photoshop, quark, freehand, and Office 2004.

The computer is in my main room which is normally about 20-24º.

I've tried to see if I am using anything in particular when it sleeps but sometimes I'll be burning a cd, and sometimes I'll only have about 2 programs open. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it!!!
