Newbie Question-1st person shooters?

Hi All,

Any reccs for basic shooting games? I have no games at all on my mac and would like to get something to have a bit of fun with. Even better would be software that's downloadable (obviously willing to pay for it!)

Quake 4 runs fine on mine

thus Quake 3 Arena (under crossover), and Jedi Academy+Jedi Outcast (also under CrossOver) work perfectly on my MacBook
 
Try out Quake Live (http://www.quakelive.com/) it's a great free game that you can play in your browser. And I can run the highest resolution in full screen with a high frame rate, so you definitely could. I have the worst iMac from the last generation.

Better yet, take Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Mac/PC/Linux crossplatform play, and free, plus all the mods etc. Its an awesome game.
 
Call of Duty 4 is very fun, be it single- or multiplayer.

Unreal Tournament series is my personal favorite FPS though. All games are great, expect for UT2003.

I seem to remember UT2003 was the first UT that let you bounce like a bunny. Some players did not like that. It added a big dimension to dynamic lightning-fast reactions combat. I adapted although I was always a am-u-ture among killers. :)
 
Once you get going, look into Bootcamp and STEAM to play VALVE's FPSs.

The older FPSs in general are better than the newer ones, games like COD4 are an exception though.

I didn't like UT when they introduced vehicles, it killed the fun for me.

And EVERYONE, should have a speedpad, so something like one of these. :)

Half Life, Half Life2 and Episodes, and Left 4 Dead (PC/Console?) are among the best shooters I've ever played. And I have a N52. In fact I may have to break out HL2 and play it again. :D

Yes, but 2004 was better in very aspect - thats why I don't recommend 2003.

It has much more content, more polished gameplay and improved engine.

VALVE is currently my favorite PC company, especially since they didn't give up during the dark days, while other developers prematurely jumped ship, then to my joy they drowned... Serves them right! :eek:

I was really Leary about the speedpad when I first bought mine, but it only took a few hours for me to realize how great it is. Now I won't play any game without it. :)

I agree! Outstanding game variants in UT2004.

I travel a lot and don't drag it with me. But I miss it when I don't have it. It's just too handy!
 
Even though it's not really like Call of Duty, Halo etc,
Half Life 2 is a great game.
You could find a ciderized version, or use BootCamp/Parallels.
 
Truly, if you want to have a blast. Set up a Bootcamp partition (I used Windows XP SP3) and get Steam (http://www.steamgames.com) and buy Team Fortress 2. This game is so much fun, one of the best multiplayer experiences you'll have in regards to FPS's. Find yourself a nice server and have at it.

The game modes available are many and fun - Capture the Flag, Control Points, Arena, King of the Hill, Payload (push that cart!!)

I think TF2 is like $20...it often goes on sale though, I've seen on numerous occasions the price drop to $10 for a weekend special.
