Newbie question (apps being mounted as disks)

Hi,

I'm a newbie in Mac OS X but I'm quite familiar with windows and linux. When installing apps, they sometimes get mounted as a drive on Finder and I have to eject them later. Why is that happening?

Also, what is the deal with the window where I'm having to drag the app to applications folder?
