So I'm planning on moving from a PC Desktop to a new iMac very soon, I'm new to Macs, so bare with me. One thing I want to do with my new iMac is to use the internal hard drive mostly for apps and some small files. I want to keep a large mp3 music library on a fast external drive that is always connected to the iMac.

So I'm wondering if I have my music files on the external, once I drag them into my iTunes app (which is running off the internal drive), will the music files then be transferred onto the internal drive as well, into the iTunes folder? or will they import into iTunes as a program, but only kept on the external drive? I want to make sure that the music files don't take up any space on the internal drive.

Thanks.

Yep, it is. But you need ensure your “iTunes (Music app now) Library” default location is located on the external drive. There’s a setting in preferences for this. This will ensure all Music that’s in the library stays on the drive and not on your iMac. Also after you set this up any music you import to iTunes (Music) will find its home in this folder. There’s a bunch of step by step videos on YouTube.
