Newbie Question-Why Can't I Hear My Fans?

Hi there, this might have been asked here before but cannot find any thread regarding this.

I've had my C2D Macbook Pro for 5 days now and I haven't been encountering any problems with it...it's just beatiful...my first Mac lappy. But I've been wondering why I can barely hear the fans on this puppy. I mean, I haven't heard them at all since I purchased the machine. I have a Core Duo iMac and I can tell when it's fans are on.

After about 3 hours of use, my MBP seem to be a warm in the bottom but not burning warm (I have it on my lap all the time). Is this normal or are my fans not working at all. It'll be great if anyone can recommend a good fan monitor.

You don't have to actually use its "feature".
But it also is the great fan activity monitor w/ temp reading.

Welcome, my friend, to the blissful silence of Merom MBP excellence!

Mine's totally silent, with a fanless temp of under 115F, unless I run WoW, or do DVD ripping/encoding with Handbrake! Even then, it's much more quiet than the 1GHz TiBook that it replaces.

Fans are almost always on

I guess you can't hear the fans starting sounds because these're always on.
The fans in my C2D MBP are always running at 2000rpm when idle.

If you want to check the speed of fans, go download smcFanControl.

Although it doesn't support C2D MBP yet, you can run it on C2D MBP by manually editing smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/Machines.plist

What you have to do is edit the file with an editor like vi to
add the following lines right before </array>

<dict>
<key>Machine</key>
<string>MacBookPro2,2</string>
<key>Maxspeed</key>
<integer>6000</integer>
<key>Minspeed</key>
<integer>1000</integer>
<key>NumFans</key>
<integer>2</integer>
</dict>

It makes smcFanControl show the current fan speed on your C2D MBP.
I don't know if Min/Max speed are correct so it's just an easy workaround, but at least it works for showing the speed of fans.

If anyone knows about these values, please let me know.

I installed SMC Fan Control and my temparature says 123.8F. Is this OK?

I didn't know that smcFanControl works on C2D MBP.
When I first ran it on my C2D MBP, It didn't seem working...

No probs Tat...you are a great help too nonetheless. Yes, I think it does seem to work with C2D but I haven't played around with it much. If my temp of about 127f is OK, I think I'll leave the fans running in default. By the way, I've been using my MBP now for about 2 hours and garnered that temp...I hope that's normal.

Wow! SMC says my fans are running at about 1998rpm...man, can't even hear them...can this be true?

I just got a MacBook today, applied all updates and SMC update, and now I see my MacBook hovering at 50C/122F with fans going around 1500RPM (these fans are damn quiet!). Is that a good thing?

Thanks again guys...you are super helpful indeed especially this late at night or early in the morning if I may say (12:58am here in the East Coast).

Now I'm confident that I got a really good unit (no dead pixels, no cosmetics damage/imperfections, etc.) I am loving this MBP!!!

Oh and finally heard the fans just now (at least that's what I think) and they're running at about 2600rpm according to SMC. They got to 3200rpm a moment ago. I hope SMC did not configure the speeds at all without me knowing...still on default speed since I installed it.
