Being a PC User ever since PC came out I never use any other computer
I came across a Mac Apple G5 it came to me with no hard drive, hence no OS.

Not knowing ANYTHING about this type of computer I ask:

1)- Can I use a PC SAT Hard Drive
2)- Where can I get the OS for this G5 unit

I am guess I can get the OS from eBay, what is the proper name of this OS as I do not want to purchase the wrong OS

Also, is this normal:
The fans start off you hardly hear it, then as time goes on they speed up to the point I can dry my hair with the amount of air that passes thru the fan
So strong the fans are but very quite - at first I thought I should strap the computer to the desk to prevent it from flying away ( lol )

The G5 was killed by Apple many years ago.

Put it in the eWaste bin, where it belongs.

Almost nothing that you'd want to try will run on it. It's eWaste.

The max version of OS X that will run on it is 10.5.8. You won't find much in the way of software for it these days.

No, no. Take it to the metal recycler. Aluminum is worth a lot. :)

^^
Doesn't sound like you're a big fix-er geek, so I'd say go with this. Recycle, or check out the awesome furniture thread that the MacRumors guys posted a few days back. My nightstand is actually two G5 cases.

Don't scrap it. google "mountian mods motherboard tray" and convert the chassis to fit off the shelf PC parts.

A. You can use any SATA hard drive.

B. 10.5 is the last OS version you can run it but its IBM PowerPC architecture and not IBM x86 so software support is dead.

Wait! Before you trash it, consider posting in the 'power pc macs' forum. Consider it a hobby, though, not a serious computer.

I agree with Zeus. You should take all the parts out and build a hackintosh. This way you get a nice looking computer and you have OSX! only thing is that the inside will not look like a Mac Pro at all!!

Great Scott, Mother of Pearl

First I'd like to take time and give you people my Thanks in your fast replies. I just posted my post and in no time at all - all these awesome replies.. Much Thanks to all....;)

It now seems this G5 and I were just meant for each other ( I type with a grin ) Talk about destiny.... Ha ha ha Laughing in French I am .

I thought this G5 was worth my time and a few dollars to invest to get it up and running... Impressed by the inputs for sound and video even my fancy high-end PC Sabertooth X79 doesn't have some of these inputs. OH WELL.

Oh the destiny part... haha

Funny you all say send to be recycled, give it to a scrapper

Fact is,, I am a scrapper, and I will strip this puppy down and sell it as scrap metal. I'll get back to you and post what I got for it,, to finish this joke..

Again, Thank you everyone,,, saved me 20.00 bucks I was going to buy the OS on eBay, and 70bucks for a SATA Drive

( holds up a glass of Ale )... Cheers !!
