I need some help.
I am going to unlock and jailbreak my iPhone 3G myself because I don't feel like paying someone to do it. I just need some hints and stuff so I won't mess up the phone.

I have a few questions as well.
I had an iPhone 3G on 3.0 unlocked/jailbroken..all my apps are still on iTunes and my music. Should I restore to backup to get my apps and music back on to it before the unlocking and jailbreaking..or once I unlock and jailbreak can I just sink it to the phone?

Second. I know I am using BlackRa1n to jailbreak the phone..but how does it unlock it?
If someone can tell me the steps I need to take to do this, that would be great.

Lastly, the last time I tried to restore the phone before the jailbreak..it got stuck in the recovery loop..and gave me the iTunes 160x message..I don't want to go through that again.

I know there are videos on youtube but I am not sure if I should trust them.
Any hints, tricks, advice would be really helpful before I start.

Oh and I also want to get MMS on the phone, how do I do that?

First, you should read all of the posts in each of the sticky threads at the top of this forum, especially the Pwnage Guide. Second, only when you understand exactly what you will be doing and how it will affect your phone should you attempt to jailbreak anything. Third, since you are already having issues, you should definitely upgrade to the latest firmware 3.1.2 before you jailbreak your phone and be sure to set up as a new phone rather than restoring from backup.

When all that is done, you just run blackra1n on your computer to jailbreak your phone. When you are done, there will be a tiny application called "blackra1n" on your iPhone which you can use to install Cydia for package management and blacksn0w for unlock.

my iPhone is already running 3.1.2 *5/11/07*

the jailbreak itself seems simple enough.
it is the stuff with iTunes that worry me more than anything.

What do you mean by "the stuff with iTunes"?

Incidentally, jailbreaking and unlocking with blackra1n does not require a restore if you are already on 3.1.2. You will not lose any of your apps, settings, or content and will neither have to restore nor to set up as a new iPhone.

oh okay..see that is what I did last time..I restored my phone and I guess iTunes was corrupt, at least that is what apple said and it kept me in the recovery loop.

my iPhone 3G is completely empty right now brand new. so you are telling me I can go ahead and use blackra1n without having to even open iTunes if I am correct?

So my next question is once I have done the jailbreak/unlock process
to get my OLD apps and music that I had on my old iPhone 3G..I will just sync it like normal?

ah this is good to know thank you!
one more quick question and then I will get out of your hair.
any clue on how to get MMS back on my phone..I don't remember the settings I had on my old phone :(

MMS messaging is included in your plan now and enabled by default. If it is not working, attach your phone to iTunes and check for updates. It should ask if you want to install the new carrier profile. Install it and you're all set. No need for any hacks.

alright so just to make sure..im a spaz I know.
blackra1n for the jailbreak
once I am there I will get Cydia for everything
and Blacksn0w for the unlock
and I don't need to restore?
