A guy named Florian just appeared over there and announced that he had made some discoveries in the 5870 EFI.
When the Apple 5870 came out, placing the Apple ROM or even just the EFI on a PC card got you NOTHING. (NADA)
Netkas was able to fix the EFI to work with PC 5870s. Sadly, the only boot screen was on VGA connected to lower DVI port.
With his first batch of test roms, Florian has been able to get boot screens on DVI !!! Yes, would have been nice a few years back but MUCH better late than never. And he is likely going to try to get the DP and HDMi ports showing boot screens.
This will make 5770 and 5870 better options, especially for 1,1 and 2,1 as they run on OSs that don't need boot.efi fix.
And very gratifying that instead of the endless outstretched "gimme, gimme" hands, we have had someone show up with something to offer and make a step forward.
This is great news for everyone running a flashed 5870 who is tired of needing a VGA display to see boot screens. Go look for the "Port mapping" thread and update your 5870 for DVI boot screen. If he doesn't post fixes for 5770, I will.
This info could very well lead to more and better AMD options.
Anyhow, great news for people on a budget.
The only downer with flashed 5770 and 5870 is most of them will NEVER work with Apple LED MDP displays. Has to do with early DP spec not meshing with MDP.
