Hello

I’ve bee running El Captain on my Mac Pro 1.1 for while without any problems. I have been doing all updates and security updates as well
and all fine until yesterday.
I installed the latest Security Update 2018-001 for the “Meltdown”.
The computer now freezes on the start up and keep re-starting on its own when the Apple logo appears.

Fortunately, I have a second drive that I can boot from which is a copy of the other system before the security update.

My Questions are: Do I really need this update since this a computer is used mostly for internet browsing and kids home work?
Is there any way to install this security update on the older Mac Pro 1.1 running Captain.
Should I go back and install Mavericks back the same way I installed El Capitain

Regards to All

I am sorry, but I can't answer any of your questions, but I have a few.

Should I go back and install Mavericks back the same way I installed El Capitain

If the MacPro 1,1 would be still vulnerable to meltdown with Mavericks, why not just stick with El Capitan? Just use your copy of the boot drive you have.

And why go back to Mav and not use Yosemite? Just wondering.

I am also using a Mac Pro 1,1 but I am using Maverick with it. My daughters use it for games and homework.

Other than the issue you are describing, how does the 1,1 run with El Capitan? I was thinking of upgrading for various reason, but was curious about how 1,1 runs under 10.11.

The reason I mentioned Mavericks is because I have a USB installer for that. It also seems that this new security update is for Captain and above.
I don't have the Yosemite installer ready as I do for Mavericks.
Other than that, the computer runs great under Captain and also when I had Mavericks installed a while ago

Okay thanks.

I installed Mavericks on mine, and it seems to run okay, but there are a few minor bugs. I was thinking of doing a El Capitan install on it, but was unsure how it would do when compared to Mavericks.

I wonder if you did a fresh install of El Capitan, then did the security updates, would you experience the same problem.

Also, I wonder if the security update messed with the bootloader, and is now causing you issues.

The latest security update does not work on our unsupported macs running El Capitan, so until or even if a fix can be found to get it to work the experts are saying "do not try it".

Well, if this is correct, that answers the OP's question.

I can only say that this a different type of security update, meaning that it's bigger than the previous ones that I had no problem installing.
I even downloaded the security update installer .dmg which gives me a yellow warning when tried to install the second time.
The first I i did through the app store, that's when I got my system broken.
Mavericks was running great when I had it and so is Captain. I'm just afraid to use the computer without the latest security update. Other than that, it runs really good, Thanks to this forum where I found all the directions for the installation.

Thanks Smile!
Yes, don't try it! I'm glad I had another system with Captain on my second SSD or I would be sad.
