Two things:

Does anyone know if there are plans for Apple to release a new remote for the ATV? It sucks for searching. They need to design some kind of a remote with a landscape ability to text your searches. That would be much much faster than navigating to each letter like now.

Are there any updates in the near future that might fix the "buggy" behavior of fast forwarding/rewinding/chapter skipping feature while watching movies? I can't be the only one who's ATV freezes or locks up every time I try to fast forward or chapter skip through a flick...it's ridiculous

Q1: No, but I understand with some hacking you can open up a huge amount of possibilities. USB devices such as keyboards, mice, and controllers.

Q2: You know, I don't have too much trouble rewinding/forwarding outside of audio sync problems. Never had ATV freeze because of this. If it's a software issue that you're experiencing, lets hope it gets fixed.

That's what I use most of the time and love it. I use my iPod Touch. If I'm running Firefox on ATV, then I usually go ahead and plug in a keyboard and mouse.

No need to do that, Apple has an official Remote app for the iPhone/iPod Touch that works perfectly with the Apple TV. It will even let you type in search boxes using the keyboard! The app also controls iTunes, and will quickly switch your iTunes AirPlay control as well so you can output audio from your iTunes to your Apple TV.

This is how they intend people to really use the Apple TV, not that clunky IR remote.

Ewww IR, what kind of world do we live in where that is still used for this kind of thing?

FCC reports show that the new AppleTV supports Bluetooth, so perhaps you could pair something like the magic trackpad and/or wireless keyboard to it. It will be interesting to see if/how Apple decides to use this functionality.
