Hi

I've just popped into my local  Store in the Uk, and their demo models running iOS 9 have the News App ,and the Region is set to the Uk ?

Couldn't ask as everyone was serving the multitude of customers in connection to the new iPhones etc.

Wondering if they have some form of Special iOS 9.0 ?

Go figure.

Definitely 9.0 not 9.1?

100%

I took a look in the Settings - General - About - of 4 of the working models in the store.

They all showed as iOS 9.0

Huh. Well, it is Apple so like the custom software running on their "price display" iPads it's not unsurprising. Although it does make me think (OK, hope) we could be in for a sneaky update with the 6S launch. Seems odd they'd be showing off something no one here could use until November if rumours are to be believed.

Just spoken to Apple Uk Support on the phone.

He thinks because the iPhones are on Apples own VPN they hook up to American Servers this giving the news app options.

Plausible?

Plausible if their region is set to US on the devices but if it's set to UK then I don't think it would show anyway. We can make it show here apparently by changing the device region to US. It's in the software just hidden outside US.

Yes same for me.

The advisor suggested the region change.

I asked if that would affect  Pay and he said it would be best to change the Region back to the uk before using  Pay.

I'm running 9.1 beta so have the news app anyway. And even if not, none of my banks support Pay anyway so no hardship :/

This is from  Chat.

My opening Question

Ok. My query is connected to iOS 9 and the feature called the News App. I'm aware it's not launched in the Uk yet but can be accessed by changing the Region to U.S. I've just visited my local  store in Leeds and the shop working models are on iOS 9 , set to the U.K Region and have the News App in them ? Any idea why they have this feature when it's not currently available in the U.K ?

I understand that you would like to know why the demo devices in the Apple Retail Store have the News app but other devices with iOS 9 do not have that available, is that right?

My Reply.
Yes please.

"The reason for this is because it is a demo device. The demo devices have the app available because Apple wants for the customers to experience the app however, it is currently not launched as you know.

Many customers go into the Apple Retail Store to look at the iPhones before making the purchase and the demo devices allow them to see what is coming available in those apps."

And many of those will be back two days later asking "where's the news app thingy I looked at on the device in store?" Surely the OS on the demo devices should reflect what users would actually be using? Odd approach.
