I just came over from Android, and one thing I really enjoyed was the Google Now app showing me articles pertaining to my interests. I set up subscriptions in the News app, but the widget is still showing Top Stories - mainly political news that I don't particularly care for. Has anyone managed to get only subscribed news to show up in the widget?

I'm sorry I can't help you there. I'm not a Google News & Weather app user myself but it seems they haven't build this in yet by looking at a review in the US App Store. It also seems the Google app doesn't offer a widget with News although the app itself does offer it.

There is an alternative app but that is only available in certain countries (not in UK or US) so it seems which is SmartReader for Google News where you do have that option but that one lacks a widget though :(

If you are in the US you might also try the Bing app which also has a nice news widget.

You might try if Apple News is an option for you. It also offers a widget as well. For some reason I cannot download the app from the App store but I can use the widget but no personalise but that should be perfectly possible via the app though.
