I saw that too, and was mildly annoyed. But I know that they meant video content. Not to mention, if the "content" owners would let it be sold DRM free, I'm sure Jobs would be happy to do so. The article makes it out like Jobs was some type of diabolical genius to include the DRM, when really it is the content providers who conveniently created this lock-in for him. This makes me laugh, because they are ending up getting hung by their own rope because the lock-in they created gave Apple more power in their industry. Suckers.
Not only that but it's meant to imply proprietary DRM is unique to Apple products. Hello Zune, Kindle, Nook, PSP, DS, etc, etc. This kind of half-ass reporting is why people don't bother buying supposed "news" magazines like NW anymore.
Why does Wozzy queue outside stores for Apple gear? Surely he of all people should be able to get iPads, iPods, iMacs served to him on a silver platter.
A couple of errors.

develop some technology that expands 9.7" to 50".
"Decrem says the device's snappy Apple-developed microprocessor offers new freedom to game designers who in the past have had to make compromises because of the iPhone's limited power. "Now that limitation gets blown away. My designers can do whatever they want to do," Decrem says." - apparently the A4 chip used in the iPad is not even based on the A9 arm technology, it's based on the A8 which the 3Gs still uses, so your baseline may move from the 3G to the 3Gs but lets not get carried away!

The only reason this type of content is being created now is because of the tight business model delivery and encryption. Its called premium content and there's not a lot of it on the web because it's all free.
Having said all that, it's still a good article and whets the whistle in the runup to launch day.

Correction for you and the article: the iPad will become my TV on April 3. I bought a sling box specifically for the purpose of watching my Tivo on the iPad around the house. People will use it for TV right away.
Yesterday The Times announced that they would start charging for their online content from June.
I understand the logic behind it, in fact I already pay for the online content from The Economist and the Financial Times.
But I honestly think that Apple and the iPad pushed newspapers into wrongly believing that people in general would be happy to pay for premium content. For some info, yes, they would be. But then newspapers would also have to provide better content and more options. You look at The Times online version and you find content that is just above tabloid quality. That's not going to be enough.

Good read. It will interesting how people react to this closed environment that Apple is building. I'd be lying if I say it doesn't make me feel queasy. I could easily see them being sued to open up the iPhone OS if this starts to be viewed as a monopoly.
Probably the same way they reacted to the closed environment Nintendo, Sony, Amazon, and so many other company created for there products. And it's really inaccurate to say Apple is creating a closed environment because you can import your own music, video, and books as long as the don't have non-Apple DRM.

This isn't some new closed system. Apple has been very successful selling from their walled garden for many years. The iPad is but another flower in the garden.
The difference is that none of the products you mentioned are computers. Anyone can see the iPad will ultimately become computer. Jobs positioned it as a netbook replacement and Ive said in the iPad video that this is where Apple is headed. Apple didn't just throw iWork on there for no reason.
Yes, it is pretty accurate because you cannot install any apps outside the App Store. As far as I'm aware, you can't download anything from Safari. As for media, any movies you buy within iTunes can't be used anywhere else. I can assume that it will be the same with book publishers and iBooks. The last argument may not be Apple's fault but when taking a look at the whole picture, it does cause concern.

Which issue (date) is that? Current issue out on the stands now?
It's not a monopoly. Do you know how many other tablets are coming out this year? Every company under the sun is releasing one. Steve Jobs preventing you from buying those? Nope. Do you have to buy an iPad to get on the internet? Nope. Is it a computer? Nope. It's a media appliance that can replicate a lot of computer functionality.
My PS3 can play movies, play games, show pictures, play music, browse the web, and run Linux. It also has dedicated processors preventing me from running any non-approved code. So if the iPad is a computer then my PS3 is a computer as well and by your definition Sony should open it up. But they don't and they won't. And that's perfectly legal.
You can install apps from outside the App Store. You can download in mobile safari. You can use these movies elsewhere.
- I can only play XBox games on my XBox 360
- I can only play Playstation 3 games on my Playstation 3
- I can only play Wii games on my Wii
- I can only view Amazon books on my Kindle
- I can only put .308 ammo in my deer rifle
- I can only put DVDs in my DVD player
- I can only put blu-rays in my blu-ray player
- etc etc etc
I can't take my PS3 games and stick them in my XBox and play them with a Wii-mote can I? No. How is that acceptable but the App Store isn't?
OS X is never going away. OS X will never be replaced with the iPhone OS. Don't start getting irrational fears, they are entirely different classes of devices. I am not going to even begin to compare an iPad to my 17" MacBook Pro, they are two entirely different classes of devices.
