Next Apple Monitor - Thunderbolt 2 Enabled?

Just wondering what people thought about Apple's next Monitor that they "said" they will make, probably ready when the new Mac Pro comes out (targeted probably late 2019?).

Do you think Apple will also have a port on the Monitor so the Mac Pro 2013 can hook-up to it? That would help make up for the issues with the Mac Pro 2013, especially if the next monitor can also be attached to it.

Just some "hopeful" thoughts and would like to see what people think or see if anyone "might" know something... Hoping that Apple throws a bone to us who bought the Mac Pro 2013.

That would make sense, but I suspect they'll sell you another dongle.

PS. When did Apple announce a new Apple display is on the horizon?
 
April 20th 2017, along with a new Mac Pro (maybe 2019).

If it's a 5k or higher resolution, thunderbolt 2 won't work as it doesn't provide enough bandwidth. You can connect a 5k LG display to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, and it'll work, but only at 4k resolution.

Problem is that nobody's selling dual cable 5k displays at this point. If Apple sells a display, it'll certainly be Thunderbolt 3.

Apple has thrown 0 bones to MP 6,1 owners. Don't expect any favors now.

Sounds like you can connect either the Thunderbolt display (the old one), the 5K displays that have 2 Displayport inputs chained together (Dell and HP used to have those, but they've stopped making them), but you can't run a Thunderbolt 5K monitor (the LG Ultrafine 5K) because Thunderbolt doesn't let you chain together 2 old Thunderbolt 2 ports into one new Thunderbolt 3 port.

Hook it up with just a Thunderbolt (TB) v2 cable or DisplayPort/HDMI cable? No.

Buy a TBv3-to-TBv2 converter probably.

Most likely this will be a "one input" port wonder just like the original Thunderbolt Display (docking station) and the two UltraFine displays

If there are 1-2 displays they'll likely just be TBv3. The 5K UltraFine has a choked down ( lower than native resolution) mode for the Mac Pro 2013 now. It wouldn't be hard to put it on another monitor built to Apple's requirements.

I think folks are fooling themselves if think the monitor Apple is mentions is solely being constructed just for the new Mac Pro. Extremely likely it is not. Doing service as docking station for the vast majority of laptop line up is probably another role it will be tasked with.

Also likely Apple will skip the use case where multiple video sources ( more than one computer and/or TV source ) is hooked up. No built in Keyboard/monitor switch. Same thing with buttons or controls on the monitor. Likely none.


IMHO, the better fit would be a 21.5" 4K model that has Thunderbolt v3. ( The one port wonder MacBook is now a screwball corner case that really doesn't deserve a targeted monitor at all. ). If the MP 2013 needs a full resolution, native 5K monitor there are already options out there. Apple probably isn't going to try to sell every monitor type to everybody. One, maybe two, monitor docking stations and that will be probably be it. ( and those will probably leverage the iMac screen options. Basically the same panel and controls. )

You can get something. You just don't get full native 5K bandwidth.

Two THunderbolt cables to the same device from the single host isn't a viable option for non monitors either.

There would be a solution if Apple had a monitor that had a "non docking station" mode and multple inputs. For example, One Thunderbolt 3 , one HDMI , two DisplayPort. That would work. Apple probably won't build that though whereas several mainstream monitor makers do.

As anyone with a Mac Pro 2013 use the LG 4K monitor sold at Apple and it worked? I read that only the LG 5K works on Apple's site (reduces to 4K), but does not mention if the LG 4K would..?

True, but I also have a Macbook Pro 2018, so I would use the monitor for both (ideal) if the LG is worth the price (don't think so, but might not have a choice). Just wondering if anyone has used the 5k LG with the Mac Pro 2013 and liked it.

This might be the only option if apple does not have two thunderbolt 2 or 2 displayports on their next monitor. As someone said: Probably only USB-C (thunderbolt 3). That would suck.

If I were to buy a monitor at the price that the LG 5k is, I would rather buy the Apple Monitor that is coming out (hopefully) by the end-of-the-year 2019 if I can use it with the Mac Pro.

I would think that it would be close to the same price as the LG monitor...but the way apple has been pricing lately, who knows. Probably more expensive than the LG. I doubt it would sell well...but again who knows.

This might be the only option if apple does not have two thunderbolt 2 or 2 displayports on their next monitor. As someone said: Probably only USB-C (thunderbolt 3). That would suck.

Really not just Apple. Unlikely to see any new Thunderbolt v2 devices in the future. All the possible TBv2 devices have probably shipped ( minus a corner case for TBv2-to-TBv3 adapters , but even that is probably stagnant by about midpoint of this year except for rebadging/branding stuff that already exists. ).

Relative to new products TBv2 is a dead end at this point. There is already way more TBv3 systems out there than TBv2 ones. Most mid range (and up) new computer systems have at least USB Type C ports. ( In higher ranges often Thunderbolt ). The size of the system market of TBv2 systems is basically stagnant at this point. It will be on the downward shrinking stage in 2020-2021. Perhaps the v2-to-v3 adapters get more affordable over time, but that is probably all the progress going to get there.

Track what happens to the iMac (or iMac Pro) this year. If Apple adds HDR and/or "ProMotion" (higher refresh) to the iMac monitor, then it could easily creep a bit higher than the LG monitor(s). More expensive backlight system (e.g., zoned lighting and/or color gamut ) and/or more expensive panel ( adaptive refresh rate).



Over time may see more monitors similar to this in connectivity.

Nice monitor...would be interested in price when available.

When looking for a 4k, 5k or HDR monitor for the mac pro 2013, would the rule be one DP Out and/or two USB-C Out with two USB-C adapters?

Is it the same generally for 24"(ish), 27", 32" inch etc,?

There are a bunch of 4k (and some 5k) monitors from Dell, Asus, Ben Q etc. but don't know which ones work well with the mac pro. Most look more for Windows boxes (not interested). It would be used mostly for Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Logic Pro X.

Found price ranges from cheap too of course higher priced. Don't know which work well with the mac pro.

There's no way at all to use USB-C displays with the 2013 Mac Pro; the Thunderbolt 2-3 converter requires actual Thunderbolt devices. Unless you can find one of the discontinued dual input 5k displays, 4k is your only option for that computer.

Anyone know (or use currently) which ones (5k) that work with the Mac Pro? Also, Would any 4k work ok if it has DP Out?
