Next backup size: 75GB? (16GB iPhone 4)

I'm helping my friend with a problem on his 16GB iPhone 4.

iCloud won't backup, as it says the next backup size is 75GB

Tried a hard reset. Didn't work.

Any ideas?

5 GB Is the Default Amount of Storage

Since 5 GB is the default amount of storage, I could understand if your iOS device asked you to upgrade to the 20 GB plan. This plan is available to me.

Have you tried signing out of iCloud completely? Then signing back in and letting it recalculate?
My next suggestion would be to try "Reset all Settings" under Settings >> General >> Reset.

The was a bug with early iOS 6 where it would store all message attachments, even if the message chat was deleted. It was fixed in 6.1 I believe but I think it returned, since my iCloud backups were growing pretty rapidly (iPhone 5 on 6.1.4 and an iPad Mini on 6.1.3).

There is software that you can use to get into your phones system files and delete attachments. If that isn't an option for you, a clean restore will fix it but the data backups will continue to grow again.

This is why I moved my iPhone and iPad backups back to iTunes, they were both taking up a 1GB of space and I only have the free 5GB plan.

That still doesn't explain why it shows 75GB is next update size. It's a 16GB iPhone!!

If you look at Settings > General > Usage, what is using all of that storage?

Did you try the suggestions to sign out, and then to try reset? I would be surprised if those did not solve your issue.

There is nothing that could be using all that storage, no iPhone has over 64GB of storage and in this case it's a 16GB phone.

Yes, and that is why I asked him the question I asked him, to help diagnose which part of the OS is generating the incorrect information.

Or, I guess I could have just guessed.

I guess some people always reply without reading thru the whole article!! I feel so sorry for them!
75G on 16GB iPhone!!! It has to be some bugs!!!!

iCloud's backs up files transferred by imessenger. Sometimes delete your SMS reduce your iCloud back up size. But again, 75G over a 16G iPhone... I guess delete your iCloud account and login again might help.
