So where are we in this thing? I haven't been following.

Bluray vs. HD-DVD

I know the technical aspects of both well.

I just want to know how there are doing.

I'd like one to fail so I can safely invest in the winner.

On the other hand, how is HVD doing?

As far as quality goes, the video streams of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are 100% identical. Same codec, same format, same bitrate, same resolution, same encryption. As far as I know, Blu-Ray movies generally have better sound as there is more space on a Blu-Ray disc than an HD-DVD.

Sadly, I think Blu-Ray is winning.

Here's something I posted on Engadget about the matter:

It would help if there were actually MOVIES on HD-DVD. I used to have an HD-DVD player and got rid of it because all the good movies were on Blu-Ray! I'd go to Best Buy and see all the movies I want in the Blu-Ray section, and all the crappy movies on HD-DVD.

Reminds me of Jurassic Park ... "You did say that there would be DINOSAURS on your DINOSAUR TOUR, right?"
Link.

HVD is going nowhere fast...

Ummm, Blu-ray mostly uses the older MPEG-2 codec, hence the mosquito noise, and HD DVD uses the more advanced VC-1 codec meaning a clearer picture.

Some Blu-ray discs use the VC-1 or MPEG-4 codec, but very, very few.

Blu-ray is selling more due to coupons and giveaways for PS3 customers...

I don't know. Everyone keeps saying that it's because of the PS3 coming with coupons but I don't see that many PS3's selling in the first place.

I hear a heck of a lot more about Blu-Ray and the companies (Toshiba, etc) are coming out with cheaper players ($299) soon. Another interesting thing, at least I think, is that a lot more of the Blu-Ray discs are combos that can be played in a regular DVD player. You'd think those studios that are backing HD-DVD would use combos as a huge selling point for the current consumer.

I just grabbed an HD-DVD player for my 360 a couple days ago and its great. I've got King Kong which came with the player and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The video and sound quality are amazing. Video looks so much better than a regular DVD.

I've got a copy of Planet Earth coming in the mail, I hope it shows up soon. That was my main reason for buying the player :D

I don't have any experience with Blu-Ray though. I think the only reason it outsold HD-DVD for the past few months was because everyone was buying PS3s and since there were no games, they bought movies to watch on it. I'm expecting things to level back out and now that some companies are starting to make players that don't cost upwards of $500, more people will start buying.

Planet Earth is on HD-DVD?

I'm sold.

That would be the only thing ever I would like to watch in HD. I find for shows like LOST and co. that HD just shows off how bloody terrible the effects are.

Just so you know, it's also available on Blu-Ray as well.

This debate is years away from being decided, and by then, another better format(s) will be available to add to the debate.

what about the tv seasons and anime, etc? i think the people there will go with blu-ray due to the storage, and i'm surprised there aren't alot of tv shows yet on blu-ray, but i heard 24 was coming to blu-ray.

i hope blu-ray wins, hd-dvd doesn't sound like a new technology, it sounds like old technology add on.
