I think Apple should keep the Nano as a traditional iPod with a click wheel. Keep it as an option so you can pause/change the track without looking at the screen or pulling it out of your pocket.

That looks alot better than the zune clone on the rumors page. that tall one doesnt look like something apple would do at all. I cant really see them going from tall to the current design then back to tall. its just not their style.

I am going to have to agree with him. The click-wheel was made for the iPods. It was just Apple wanted at least one iPod that was touch-screen. (I think).

I don't think that the next nano will be touch screen. Maybe the 5th generation though.

This is my quick 'n' dirty mockup showing how the dimensions of the new nano could remain the same as the 2nd generation whilst adding a screen with the same aspect ratio as the iPhone and iPod touch. While the current nano is nice, I really think that Apple should have kept with the tall design so that they could switch to a wider screen format.

Of course I'm not saying that it will look exactly like that, but you get the idea.

I have Sony Walkman, a NWZ-A815 which can view videos in landscape-by changing the layout of the screen, via a setting.

Apple's take on this could be very clever and use a hardware based sensor in the nano that detects whether it's held vertically or horizontally and changes the screen orientation accordingly.

The iPhone/iPod touch seems to use the latter system.

The OP's and iLounge's ideas both sound pretty good.
Kinda like the OP's could be something like the return of the iPod mini... but as an iPod touch mini. :D
And then apple could continue the classic click wheel with the nanos. And go taller or whatever they doing.

There are more odds of touch features being available in the Classic.
The nano screen would be way too small especially to touch the right thing.
And the pic with all the nanos, and then the nano with a "touch screen" and click wheel is crap.
There would be no reason to have a click wheel and a touch screen, it would make no sense.
