I have a MBP 13 with M1 and battery time is fantastic if I only have low load like safari with few tabs/windows and maybe mail open. Too many apps and it drops significantly.
The question is is it reasonable to expect M2 (or whatever the name will be) to further improve battery life in next model that most likely will have a redesign. Or will it be slimmed down and have less than the current MBP?
Looking at the iPhone 11 which had the best battery life so far then 12 came out with further energy improvements but smaller batteries so in effect no improvement rather the opposite. I wonder if we will see the same phenomena in next generation MBP?

I suspect as much but I guess I can always sell this model or most likely keep it and be happy with the battery life.

Thoughts, am I off or what are your thoughts?

I would suggest a strong NO.

The reason why I say this?
Apple seem to like to keep battery life the same once they have set a standard with a product.
They increase power and 'fiddle' with the battery so they can say something like.

"2x the speed and still the same all day battery life"

They generally won't stick a 2x life batter in just for the hell of it.
Likewise they don't want people saying "The battery life is a lot worse on the new model"

With that In mind I'll suggest they will wish to increase power and maintain battery life.
That said, I could see them accepting less battery life for models which are designed to have a lot higher power as am acceptable trade-off.

Yep I think you are spot on. Speed wise I am fine with this M1 since the leap from intel is huge! So unless battery improves IO don't see myself upgrading anytime soon.

No. They'll likely make the next devices faster and keep the same battery life.

Likely, they'll reduce battery capacity gradually over time to reduce overall device weight. The next redesigned MacBook may be 1.5x faster, 80% the weight (so 2.4lbs instead of 3lbs) and keep the same battery life.

You may not want a new MacBook due to hardware features, but Apple knows how to force you to eventually upgrade after 7-8 years. For instance, Macs older than 2013-2014 are no longer supported with Big Sur. And Big Sur is necessary for certain things, such as support for Airpods Max.

I think it's very reasonable for any company to encourage/force customers to upgrade their computers after 7-8 years of ownership. Heck I think even 5 years is long enough.

I fully embraced the M1 replacing all my machines with a Mini and a MacBook Pro (yes, went back to it)... I hope nothing major comes up the next two years so I am not tempted.

While I know what you're saying for your own sake, but as a person who has not made my first Apple silicon purchase I am very much hoping something major comes up so I can have a reason to trade in my 16" MBP and I also need a 13 or 14" MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. I'm waiting for the second generation of the first releases. Hopefully with mini LED and a redesign.
