LOOPRumors received a tidbit of information today suggesting Apple is planning to develop a hybrid OS into their next iMac. The iMac should be equipped with both Mac OS X and a touch interface for iOS.

A few weeks ago, Steve Jobs announced that Apple is renaming iPhone OS to iOS. The company has been putting a major focus on Multi-Touch™ since the iPhone’s debut, and adding it to their desktop line is inevitable. Such a move will assist developers in building and testing iOS apps, while opening up new possibilities for touch-screen computing.

Our source indicates that Apple will release the new iMacs at a Special Event within the next 60 days.

If I buy an iMac I want a mac, not a giant iPad.

If apple does this I will never buy another product from them, the iMacs are one of my favorite products they make currently and if they destroy them I swear to god I will sell my iPod and get a Zune.
 
I would hate to see this come to light - but I think it is inevitable. Apple is bound to turn the common desktop computer into just another iGadget. The fact that they can lock down everything through the App store will just be too tempting for them not to pursue this course.

If it was done correctly, it might turn out to be the way to the future. But a good implementation will be long off, and if this is rushed in it would be a disaster. A boot camp that would allow switching from Mac OS X, iOS with touch screen capabilities would be pretty nice - but at this point it would still just be a toy.

Perhaps one day in the future, Apple's Pro Machines will run OS X for development, and Apple's consumer line will all feature an iOS type of system/interface.

I do miss the company once known as Apple Computer.

The only way this would be done right is if it had tablet control, a stand that could move in all angles, pen support, pressure support, and not iOS, but Mac OS X with touch screen abilities.

Aka, what the iPad should have been.
 
Well look at the last mouse refresh with the 'Magic Mouse' ...

...seems like apple wants less and less "pushing of buttons" and more touch-surfaces...

Maybe the screen itself wouldnt be a touch-based screen...but I can see them eliminating the keyboard somehow (hell the current iMac keyboard is already practically a toy in size)

I would. When a company does **** like that, I don't buy from them anymore and make sure I don't own anything that they have. It's the same reason I will never buy from my local computer store, they wanted 2000$ to make a normal gaming PC. I wasn't asking to play Crysis with max settings, I was asking to play TF2 and L4D when I got bored.
 
What spoke volumes to me was learning that the only reason even the latest top line 27" iMacs still don't have bluray drives due only to the fact that Apple don't want you to buy movies on discs but to download from iTunes instead.

And as iTunes can't offer you quality up to bluray yet, then apple had decided to basically punish loyal customers.

Learning things like this is enough to put me off Apple for life.

They should be offering high end good looking hardware to customers not restrict them till try can try and squeeze more cash out.

Can't be right PCs have newer tech at lower prices.

Come on Apple, look after you loyal customer please.

I think they realized that if you are an apple fanboy/girl you will buy it if they make it and it's shiny. Why do you think the iPad made so many sales?

I just personally think it's a shame. I want a Mac to be as good on the inside as it looks on the outside. And think it's wrong that if you want the latest on the inside then Apple do not deliver that and you have to get a PC.

Perhaps one day they may change this.

Not having blu-ray is not about added cost. Apple can add blu-ray player support to OS X without putting BR players in their machines. Consumers could swap drives themselves if that was the case and Apple wouldn't have to deal with extra costs or other issues (whatever "other" issues there may be).

My hope is that Apple is holding off on adding blu-ray support in OS X until the next Mac Pro is realeased with a blu-ray BTO option. That will be the first machine with BR and the others will follow. I'm much less optimistic after the recent mini release though. The mini would have been a perfect introduction of BR in the Apple lineup being that it is being touted as a HTPC. If the next Mac Pro doesn't have a BR option, we won't be seing BR on Apples anytime soon (if ever).

If Apple gets off it's high horse and allows companies like HP, Toshiba, and whatever companies make hardware use OS X I would switch and never go back. But Apple has to overprice their products and make Leopard check if it's on apple hard ware.

I gotta say, my Zune HD is awesome. Along with the Zune software and pass. It's far nicer than iTunes, and has saved me thousands and thousands of dollars in music purchases all for 15 bucks a month. It's the one thing MS does totally right in my opinion. It's better than any music player Apple has ever put out. Totally worth running on a VM under OSX.

I heard about this about six months ago. Not all imacs will be 'touch enabled'. Just one model of imac. You will be able to buy a non touch imac. If that was the case they would not have ever invented the magic mouse.
 
I'd like to see a Mac Mini with iOS4. This would be an ideal carputer setup.

GPS, multimedia, BT synced with iPhone to make/receive calls and other potential mobile Apps.
