With todays announcement of the Nexus One being available on AT&T, with no contract, I would assume that Apple might want a well-timed leak of some juicy tidbits of information about the next iPhone to persuade people to wait for the next update. Thoughts?

Last year they held a conference on March 17 showing everything OS 3.0 was going to have. No idea what they are thinking and I seriously hope OS 3.2 is just for iPad because they seriously need to compete with the other smartphones.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to be disappointed and skipping town if 4.0 is released with another set of minor upgrades. I, on the other hand, have been planning on sticking with my 3GS for the next year since I bought it. If they decide the same form factor should stick around and slap on springboard wallpapers, all the more reason for me to skip this year's upgrade.

Stupid on their part, but it saves me money. :)

Disclaimer: I know there's going to be more than that included in 4.0. I just don't think it'll be anything to get excited about. This is opinion.

I imagine a 4.0 event will be coming soon, probably April after the iPad release.

The thought ran through my head that they're holding back on showing off 4.0 for as long as possible because they've got something about the new iPhone or another device.

I imagine we'll get 3.2 for all touch devices after the iPad launch - it would be silly to NOT bring 3.2 in some form to the other devices - and then they'll show up 4.0.

There were some rumors for a mid march apple event...guess its not happening.

That is highly doubtful since the 3.2 SDK is only for the iPad. Apple has made that much clear. If 3.2 were coming to the iPhone hardware, they would of just included it in the SDK.

I was wondering the same thing...

My 3GS eligibility comes around sometime in April, but I plan on holding off till what we hear from WWDC or before, to see whether or not to upgrade.

Not overly concerned with hardware or software, I just want to have more storage (64 Gb anyone...). As well as to have the added stuff from the 3GS.

But my 3G is kicking enough to hold out till mid-summer.

Not necessarily. Could be that they want to make sure compatibility is there. I can't see Apple keeping two different versions of the OS that far apart in version number.

(Yes, I know that they've had iPhone and iPod touch version numbers be different before but it was a x.x.1 and x.x.2 difference or something close to it.)

Why would Apple tell devs 3.2 is for the iPad only. And then after the release coming pretty soon they are later going to say, "just kidding, it really does work for the iPhone platform!". I don't see that happening and it would piss off a huge portion of the development community.

I haven't heard anything stating that it's iPad only outside of it not being able to be installed on an iPhone.

I honestly don't think Apple will do a media event about 4.0, considering it'll all be about iPad for the next few months. I think they'll reserve the 4.0 information along with the 4th gen iPhone and early peek at 10.7 at this year's WWDC. April/May is probably most likely going to be about the Mac Pros and MB/P.

The only reason why Apple would reserve all 4.0 news for WWDC is if it was a major disappointment to everyone because it included nothing major.

Apple doesn't dedicate months to specific lines/products. They release and announce when they think the time is right.

This competition is awesome! Apple and Google are going at it in full force, and we reap the benefits. Google is really sticking it to them by putting their phone on every major network. They are taking dead aim at the Atnt/Apple marriage and I'm loving it. Apple should answer by putting their phone on every major network. And even if you hate Google or hate Apple, you can't argue this isn't great for us consumers. I'm looking forward to seeing what's around the corner. These are interesting times indeed. :D

Notice I said "I think", it's an opinion of mine, not a fact. I know how other people thinks their opinions are fact.

You also misunderstood me, I didn't suggest the whole month of May or April is for those devices only, I'm just saying those devices may be released in that time frame and the blogosphere will be talking about them for a couple of weeks. Apple knows how to maximize the publicity for their new products, lasting weeks to a month for even one product. As for iPad, Apple will try to "advertise" the crap out of iPad for the next few months, they want it to be successful. Just like they "advertise" the crap out of iPhone when it was released. They are not going to release new products within weeks of iPad launch to minimize the impact of taking the spotlight away from iPad. Which is what you said as well, only differently.

As for iPhone 4.0, I think the problem is the iPad development may have slow down the development of 4.0 to miss the yearly release schedule. I'm sure Apple wants to release 4.0 for both iPhone/iPad at same time, I just don't think they have enough engineering resources to do 3.2/4.0 at same time without slowing down. It makes no sense for them to release 3.2 if they are very very close to 4.0 and they probably will not release information on 4.0 if its not ready either. The fact is there hasn't been any event announced in March, which in my opinion suggests that they are not going to do it this month, not the first week of April either, they'll probably watch out for any sudden issues with iPad firmware for the couple of weeks after that. To me, that also might suggest they'll do it in May but why do a media event in May if WWDC is just a month away?

Your assuming ATT actually knows anything. Im pretty sure Apple just hands them new phones and goes "here, sell this tomorrow"

Best prediction I've seen yet.
