nexus 7 2013 longevity

Hi everyone
I Just bought a nexus 7 2013 a month ago. I'm wondering what is the longevity of the device as I know this is a very cheap device and cannot be compared with the iPad. I also heard many people are suffering from sluggish performance for their nexus 7 2012 after just 1 year because Asus used cheap parts to reduce cost. I'm not sure if this is true at all. Will this happen again for the 2nd gen??

Since it's a Nexus device it will receive Android updates direct from Google which will help it stay up to date with the latest and greatest.

The absence of any skinning or bloatware will also help that cause.

Pretty much everyone thought that last year's model was superior when compared to the iPad mini and costs were factored in ... if you wanted an iPad though ... you should have purchased one.

Also every single manufacturer, that there is, ever, uses the cheapest parts they can to get the job done. That is just an attempt to maximize profit margin.

So ... in short ... it's really crappy. I'll buy it from you for $149. Right now. Deal??

The Nexus 7 sluggishness was a software problem - Google fixed that with the 4.3 update. (4.3 issues TRIM commands when idle thereby fixing the slow read and write speeds of the controller.)

My 2013 Nexus 7 was bought on first day it was released and with 3 user accounts and lots of app installs/updates it is still fast as new. I wouldn't worry about the longevity of the new one at all.

Typing this on a Nexus 7 from 2012. No lag and still works great like it did when I first got it. And it had a hi res display long before the iPad mini did. And all for less money. Take what you hear here about Android with a grain of salt. The android lag is now a thing of the past. There is simply no lag on at least Jelly Bean.

Enjoy your tablet. Its a fine device.

I think this really depends on what you do with your tablet, how committed Google is to keeping their Nexus devices updated.

On your first point remember that out the gate the Nexus 7 shipped with older hardware under the hood, and that will immediately affect viability and longevity. Do a restore every 6 months and performance should be good though.

Now lets talk updates. Where are they? As of right now the Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 7 2013, and Nexus 10 are in complete update limbo. "It's coming", is the best you'll get and that sloppy handling for a brand new device like the Nexus 7 almost guarantees it will be left out in the cold before the end of 2014.

I have a Nexus 7 2013. I've had it for 13 days, and while I like it, Google's sloppy update process and dubious support after a fairly short period of time means I will be taking it back while I can and waiting for a Retina iPad Mini.

I've had my 2012 Nexus 7 for almost a year and its just as fast as the day I bought it. Its a really great device for the money.

That's good to hear everyone is so positive about the nexus 7. I hope it can last at least 3-5 years. It really is an awesome tablet.

Assuming the battery isn't completely shot in 3-5 years you should at least still be able to email and watch video etc. I have no idea what the demands of the internet will be at that time though or if apps will still run.

I had the 2012 Nexus 7 and now have the 2013 version.

I think that Google and Asus learned their lesson with the slow storage. My Nexus 7 2013 has been wonderful!

BUT

I don't know what people are talking about with the 2012 Nexus 7. I loved that device too but there was no denying it got unbearably slow even after all the updates (4.3 too). I don't think it was just lack of TRIM support. I think the storage was actually also slower and low quality and lack of TRIM horribly exacerbated the problem. I'm pretty sure that Anandtech or someone confirmed that the 2013 version has much faster storage so I think we'll be ok

No, they are not in the update limbo, when KitKat was presented Google said that updates for other Nexus will came in the coming weeks. And if past updates are a sign, they came more less a month later than when the new device is presented

You are likely to get about 2 years of use out of the device.

At least with phone nexus. Google has promised 18 months of updates from the time nexus was released.

From my long android history. Android devices generally have max of 2 years of real usage. Of course u can use basic things like it as a reader. Basic email. Basic web surfing for a long time.

But hard core gaming apps. Anything intensive may only last 12-18 months.
