Nexus 9

what are people's impressions of the nexus 9 here? I'm very interested in trying out android on the tablet. Wanted to get propels thoughts on it that may be came from iOS or are just generally more privy to android tablet experience.

I would consider the new Sony Xperia tablet too if people recommend that instead.

It's a mediocre tablet that's egregiously overpriced, especially the 32gb model. The build is also questionable given the price and the OEM. Other than that it's good. But I wouldn't buy it until it comes down in price.

Its not mediocre but there are some build quality issues like the recessed buttons and light bleed. Performance is zippy and the front facing speakers are a godsend. I find myself using mine daily, though I will be sending it back to HTC to warranty the light bleed.

Yeah, it really is no different. Sometimes it annoys me and sometimes it doesn't. If it's a deal breaker for some I can understand but it doesn't affect the viewing angles at all and the screen is still gorgeous.

To me it seems like a good tablet but it should have been better. The only advantages it has over the 2013's Nexus 7 (an excellent tablet for its time and price) is a faster 64 bit processor, and of course a larger display. It still has the same RAM, about the same battery life, and the same storage options. But the Nexus 7 launched with a starting price of just $230!

If the next generation offers more of a boost in specs like RAM and storage, and/or a lower price, I will get one with little hesitation. I've been quite pleased with the Nexus 7. Stock Android offers some advantages over iOS.

I would put the N9 build a step below the iPads.That's not to say the iPad hasn't had it's issues.

Overpriced! Just like the Nexus 6. It should have been $300, no more.

I had a Nexus 7 for 6 months prior to getting my iPad Air and loved it (I even kinda miss it). The $229 price was great.

It's not a bad tablet, it's just not all that it was hyped up to be. If it weren't $400 and maybe closer to $300 or even $350, its flaws would be more forgivable and make it a better buy, but as it stands, I can't recommend it at the price it is currently at.

I don't know. It's too heavy for night time use. Yes, even the less-than-1-pound Air can get heavy when you're laying down. I want something more easily to hold with one hand while the other hand is tapping on the screen.

Also, iOS 8 just rubs me the wrong way. I don't care to get too into it, but it's buggy (apps have been crashing on it way more than normal), and after experiencing the freedom of customization with my OnePlus One (Cyanogen's take on Android is SUPERB!) it just makes iOS feel a bit dated. I'm just going in and out of apps, whereas on my OnePlus One, I feel like I've really customized the phone to my liking. I feel like it gets me more. iOS now feels a little cold and static. Just a portal to different apps and not so much an actual user experience. I don't know if that makes any sense...

Also, I find I don't really play games as much anymore so the game exclusive apps just don't appeal to me very much, and because I use cross-platform apps like DropBox to sync with my Macs, I don't find the need to stay inside the iOS ecosystem so pressing anymore.

I don't know. My displeasure with iOS 8 on the iPhone 6 is what led me to try the OnePlus One (which I'm loving). So I'm just thinking the same thing might happen with my tablet life.

However, it doesn't seem like the Nexus 9 is worthy enough to jump ship to... I saw some videos where the back plate was hallow enough that you could press down on back-center of the Nexus 9. That really turned me off! I always thought HTC had amazing build quality/design...

I was going between a Nexus 9 and a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (wanted a tablet with a good screen/speakers for movies/music/books/browsing) and ended up with the Kindle Fire after seeing a lot of complaints about the Nexus 9: unexplained lag, heat, bad screens/squishy buttons etc.. Nexus tablets just seem to have iffy build quality compared to the Nexus phones.

This looks to be an underrated but quite compelling tablet. Especially for the price. If I needed a new one I would definitely pick this bad boy up. Especially for that high res screen.

I looked at both these tablets and ended up getting the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The Sony is less powerful and has a smaller screen, but it's also cheaper and much easier to hold and lighter and waterproof.

When I looked at the Nexus it felt very fast but did lag a couple of times, for me the new format factor made it a bit too wide to hold in one hand, and I like games, I had a 2012 Nexus 7 with the Tegra 3 processor which worked fine and was great with the Tegrazone games, but it was incompatible with other non Tegra games which was very annoying. Also as Nvidia are changing their Tegra chips every year, then you find new Tegrazone games that are only compatible with the new chips.

The Snapdragon processor in the Sony is a lot more compatible, sure I'll miss out on Half Life and Portal, although it seems you can hack it onto non Tegra devices? It its more compatible in general.

In favour of the Nexus though is stock Android with regular updates, it's easy to root and flash custom roms onto if you want that, I also read the build quality issues have been resolved with the Nexus 9 and if the lag is software related it'll be fixed.

I would suggest you look at both devices as they have very different from factors and sizes in the hands, because for me it was a big part of the deciding factor. And it's the one thing you can't change.

As for iOS, I've had 3 iPhones in my life and loved iOS6, but changed to Android as I hated iOS 7, and I had an iPad Mini 2 last year and sold it after 5 months again because I hate IOS 7 and then 8. So I have given it a chance, but prefer Android at present.
iPads are nice hardware though and the Air 2 is very smooth.

Mine fortunately had none of the build quality issues early adopters suffered. It can run any game I throw at it thanks to that K1. Sadly the UI had the occasional hiccup, but these went away when I flashed a version that wasn't running encryption. Can get a little warm near the top though.

Android phones are very impressive but android tablets aren't quite as tempting.

Still very happy with my Nexus 7 2013. Don't see myself changing unless it breaks (hopefully in a long long long time) or becomes terribly slow or something like that.

I just bought a Nexus 9 on impulse for £199.99 (16GB white model).

Lovely screen, nice weight and seems very speedy. Zero complaints so far. Big improvement on my LG GPad.

I'll also be sticking to the Nexus 7. Having tried other 7" tablets it wins for me. I think if you want a bigger tablet it would be an iPad. Better tablet apps being the only reason.

I'm now thinking of buying an android device and I'm thinking of going with the nexus 9. I like the nexus 7 2013 but it's too old and the internals won't be able to keep up for much longer. Also it's not likely to be updated for much longer.

I thought I'd go with a nexus device as it's simplistic and it will make a change from touchwiz. I've used both the original and second generation nexus 7 and I have to admit I did like the fluidity and simplistic nature compared to the Samsung and LG devices that I've owned.

It's on sale at the moment and I can get the 32Gb for £299. I like the fact that it has a 64GB processor and after using iPads for so long I've come to appreciate the 4:3 aspect ratio.


One question I have is how is the battery life? I'm not expecting it to be as good as my iPad Air 2 but can you get at least 5 hours screen time?

Does it drain excessively in standby?

Battery life is pretty good. It's not iPad good by any stretch, but it's good enough for me. I can get 5 hours screen time (not 100% brightness) when gaming or watching films which works. I think if you were browsing or doing something less intensive you'd get longer.

In standby it's miles and miles better than my old N7 was. I left it last night with 9% battery and forgot to plug it in - this morning it had 6%.

I'm now thinking of buying an android device and I'm thinking of going with the nexus 9.

Why don't you try the new Tab S2, It is more powerful and a way better all round Android tablet than the Nexus 9 and Sony Xperia Tablet Z4!!

And it has aspect ratio 4:3 8 and 9.7 inch versions just like the Ipad.

And Samsung has made Touchwiz a lot more smoother, faster and TW have a lot less bloatware this year as well!!
