Hi, I think my little Echo Show 5 is on its way out, it’s suffering from screen flickering, I noticed the power supply capacitors were making a noise too. I’ve bought a new power supply and will try some things to fix the screen like resetting it to factory default etc. People think it could be software related.

If I can’t get it fixed then I may replace it, now I haven’t had it too long really about 3 or 4 years, I certainly expected it to last longer, it lives on my bedside table. I have been looking at the 2nd gen Google Nest Hub though, it has a larger 7” screen and I like the look of the menu system. I think either one will do my smarts, but I was wondering if anyone has gone from an Echo Show to a Nest Hub and what your experience has been? Is the Nest Hub better made and longer lasting?

I gave up on Alexa back in 2016 when the "Google Home Hub" (the Nest Hub before it was called that) came out. It's night and day better. Your commands process the FIRST time, not the third, and you don't deal with Alexa claiming there's 'more than one device by that name' when there's only one lamp called 'living room light' for example. That one always infuriated me.

I still have the O.G. and got a newer 2nd gen as well. They both work. Google's app to manage smart home products is a mess but once you get everything going it's great. You don't even need the app once you got everything set up.

Whenever Alexa didn't have issues doing what I asked it to, it seemed to go offline for seemingly no reason at all (the little 'cloud with slash through it' symbol on a Show, or the Echo Dots doing the 'red ring of death' and saying there's something wrong.)

The only disadvantage is that you can't customize the wake word. You can't call it 'Computer' like Star Trek, but there are certain 'unofficial' words to wake the Google Assistant, such as LGR's favorite 'hey flurbnurb!' or various others.
