I used to love this feature when my phone was on it's charging stand on my nightstand. Could easily raise my head and check the time without much effort in the middle of the night. Now it's damn near impossible to get it to show. I need to wave my arms about or make a much much bigger movement to get it to show. Why did they lower the sensitivity?! And no before you ask, I haven't moved the charger, haven't changed the lighting in the room etc. Anyone have a fix for this or is this just Apple being "Apple" and ruining a good thing as usual?

is nightstand mode different then when you put the phone on its side and see the clock or a picture slide show? If not then must be some setting wrong. I have mine going all day long at work when on a magstand dock and it shows the time and picture. The screen is consistently on, no need to get its attention to stay on to show me the time.

Maybe, like AOD itself does, it behaves differently in a pitch-black room?

There are Standby options to allow the display to be always on or “Automatically” turn on as needed. OP is describing a situation where auto has become less sensitive to movement.

Settings > Standby > Display: "Automatically" screen turns off in low light when not in use and turns on with motion or tap. Night Mode automatically adds a red tint to make the display less intrusive at night.

This ^^ and "motion to wake" is selected as well.

there are two things i'm noticing for the nightstand mode to work correctly. 1. can't have sleep music on while going horizontal 2. the usb-c port needs to be facing right. this problem was driving me mad until i pinpointed these items. can anyone else verify this on your phone too?

Doesn't matter if the USB-c port is left or right on mine, still doesn't work for ****. And I can't verify the first cause I don't sleep with music on, sorry.

interesting. i wonder if it's buggy software with a mix of hardware. i definitely see that the orientation of my charging port affects the nightstand mode display. maybe software bug affecting gyroscope.

[update] the music playing in the background can be eliminated as an issue. the orientation of the charging port is still the issue for me (gyroscope?).
