I've had this issue on two macs ever since Night Shift was introduced a few years ago. No big deal, but I thought I'd ask around if there's a fix.

Here's the issue: I turn night shift on manually (or automatically, doesn't make a difference) and the screen goes warmer, as it should, yay. Then I use the computer for a while, putting it to sleep, coming back and waking it, etc... and I notice that the screen isn't orangish anymore. I check the settings and Night Shift is "ON" but isn't affecting the screen color. So I turn it off and back on again, and then BOOM it goes orange as it should.

This happens multiple times every single day on a 2013 Retina MBP as well as a 2019 16 inch MBP. The issue happens on every OS Apple has released, including Monterey or however you spell it.

So yeah, any Plist to delete, or SLC to reset or any ideas of what to do? I kind of like night shift but I've never been able to really use it due to this problem. The worst thing ever is to have to re-adapt your eyes to the change in color three times a day. It's annoying.

PS: No this is not because it's turning off automatically in the morning or due to a schedule. It literally says it's still "ON" when I can clearly see that it isn't. I have to turn it OFF and then back ON again for it to work again.

I had a similar problem to this but with dark mode / light mode using 3 different MBPs with an external monitor - toggling it always fixed it. While night shift has done this to me a few times, it usually works for me - but dark mode / light mode (sundown/sunup settings) ALWAYS did what you explained above so I always run in night mode now because of that.
