So Im a convinced f.lux user, have been for just over a year. I believe it does reduce eye strain and helps me sleep better. So I was waiting in anticipation for 10.12.4 and the integration of Night Shift in macOS. My main problem with f.lux were the problems when playing videos full screen and the issues that was causing. So I upgraded threw the switch and took Night Shift for a drive. I have to say Im a little disappointed. One of my favourite things about f.lux was how it adjusted based on time i.e. the sun sets and the later it gets the less blue light is displayed. Whilst Night Shift turns on automatically on sunset, it is set to one single colour temperature throughout the entire night, so it doesn't adjust like f.lux. I loved this feature as it made the transition from daylight to "night mode" feel seamless and you almost wouldn't notice it unless you turned f.lux off. So I'm unconvinced with Night Shift, and am not sure whether I will use it over f.lux.

i used f.lux for years. have been using night shift since it first appeared in a beta, and... can't say i've noticed the transition,or any difference in the end result. it works, am not aware of it changing... and all is well.

but either way, you have a choice. whatever works for you, enjoy it.

F.lux has an option to spread out the transition over a much longer time. Night Shift does transition rather quickly. I also find that the colour is not nearly warm enough.

Have you tried setting Night Shift slider to warmer color in monitor settings?

I liked how f.lux let you deactivate it for specific apps, and directly from the menubar, too. I didn't want it when I was in Photos, for example, and two clicks later, f.lux would return the screen to normal whenever I switched to Photos.

That's the most noticeable advantage of f.lux for me (mainly the amount of control available from its menubar icon).

That is a significant advantage. I've also noticed that Lightshift strains my eyes for some reason whereas f.lux does not.

Thats exactly what Im experiencing. I think f.lux has much better colour management.

I'm still amazed there is no manual on switch for Nightshift in the notification centre! The toggle to switch it off only appears when active but you can't manually start it again without a trip to the settings panel. This isn't consistent given I can do this on iOS!

Exactly like that. How do you get that option to remain? When I disable it, the toggle disappears from that screen.

Hmm, I'll try a restart when I'm back home tonight and see if that resolves it. I thought it was strange that the option to turn on was not there and I had a good play around with it to see. I did have a graphics issue last night and rebooted which cleared it up but haven't checked for that toggle since so it may have been related.
Thanks for keeping me right.

you've scrolled up in the notification center? it's there for me...

Yes, I did make a point of going to the very top. Like I say, when active, it shows the toggle but as soon as I turn it off, the toggle disappears and is no longer on the today panel. I'll check again tonight following a reboot as it may be something as simple as that.

Night Shift default color is not orange enough. With the slider to the max it is somewhat ok and I think it should be the default. But I wish it was possible to go much more orange, up to f.lux level. Default color is way too conservative and pretty much as if Apple feared to scare people off.

I agree 100%.
