Anyone know/heard any news of maybe being able to use the GPS in the new iPhone to track runs? Seems like everything is there to do it, just need a little software. I know that the SDK prevents turn-by-turn directions, but this doesn't seem to be in violation. This would save me from buying a Garmin unit to track runs.

I could probably even write this, assuming that an application could get the current location every x seconds.

I think nike will probably be releasing something similar to this. Considering that the iPhone now has everything to make it a perfect running companion!

Minus the large size for a running companion. The iPhone will need gps before people would use it.

Get a Garmin Forerunner. It's utility for running will blow away anything that's available on iPhone. Also it can be used with all the great online and offline analytic tools like Sporttracks, MotionBased and Ascent

Yeah, that's another option. I'd really like to avoid buying an additional device though.

Plus, I think the data connection could make for some really cool features. Temperature updates, weather (rain, wind) updates, real-time races where each runner's iphone updates location, and you can tell your position in the race and whatnot, maybe a function where you can locate other runners nearby who are looking for a running partner, etc...

This is the kind of application I'm really hoping someone comes out with for the App Store. I currently use a Garmin Forerunner, but I think there's a lot more possibilities with the Iphone with GPS. The features that Cubsfan mentions would be great. Another one that would be nice would be the ability to record a run and then the next time you run, you could race against your previous run. The screen would show your location in relation to your last run and you could see if you're going slower or faster.

Sorry for the late reply. I am the Founder of a company called FitnessKeeper, which is building a run-tracking application for the new iPhone leveraging the built-in GPS. It will enable you to track your run duration, distance, pace, and speed, and feed that data to a web dashboard where you can keep all of your historical runs. It will be available for download through the online Apple Store, and should be launching soon! You can sign up to ne notified when the app is live at www.runkeeper.com, or contact us at info@runkeeper.com with any questions or feedback.

Runkeeper Demo

It seems like the iphone application designed to track distances and speed run using the built in iphone GPS is being demonstrated on a youtube video.

The application tracks the runner's time, pace and allows it to be stored for analysis. like competing products, it appears to have the ability to compare the run to track your progress while training.

I went to the blog www.runkeeper.ning.com where there was a youtube demo of the product running on the iphone.

it also looks like the website www.runkeeper.com has a screen shot. In the video it states the application will be available on iphone's application store shortly.

Thanks for the link. I'm looking forward to this to help me get back to my regimen.
