Hi,

I am thinking about getting a DSLR camera and i found this( Nikon D40) brand new in box from bestbuy $350. Is it worth it?. The only downside is it`s 6MP :(
Is that a big problem?. May i going to see a lot of pixelation on a 22 inch monitor or a 15 inch macbook pro?. Or is it going to ok to print size 8.5" x 11''

Thanks,

This is a decent price, so long as it comes with the lens (camera body only deals are cheaper, but if you don't have a lens, it doesn't do you much good).

6MP images on the D40 are 3008x2000... plenty large for a 1680x1050 22" (even 1920x1080 as some 22 are) or a 15" MBP (1440x900). at about 200dpi you get good quality prints, so that would be 15"x10" for "max" size printing.

More megapixels are not always better. If you have a cellphone with 6MP, the D40 will provide better pictures because it has better optics and a larger sensor, which means less noise (fuzziness/graininess/chromatic aberrance).

I think thats a vert decent price! I just bought my d40 in late march and I paid $420. I got mine off of newegg.com. BTW I love my d40 its light weight and works like a champ! Im a beginner and its great to learn with, if it's your first DSLR.

It does not show up online. There are only couple stores in ny with these prices.
Bronx Best Buy by the yankee stadium ( the one in the mall ) $ 355.99 plus tax with 4gb sd card deal.

Best Buy in manhattan ( 84th street and Lexington Ave.) $ 354.99 plus tax no sd card deal.

The one in the Bronx is the best deal, i think...

Don't worry about the 6 mp. I have a D40 and have 24x36" pics printed and they look great

Hi,
. The only downside is it`s 6MP :(
Is that a big problem?. May i going to see a lot of pixelation on a 22 inch monitor or a 15 inch macbook pro?.

Why is 6MP a "down side"?

Even if some day you buy a 30 inch LCD monitor with 2560 x 1600 resolution that is only 4.1MP. So the D40 has more pixels than you will need now or in the future if you only intend to look at the images on an electronic screen.

IF you make prints to photo paper then it's different. Paper has much higher resolution than an LCD. A D40 can make profesional quality photos up to 8x10 size A 12MP camera would allow larger 14 inch wide prints.

I assume the D40 comes with a lens? You'd better check. Given the price it might be a body-only deal. The D40 is normally paired with Nikon's 18-55mm f/5.6 lens. It is a decent lens. Make sure you are getting this and not some no-name brand. The lens is what really maters. SLR bodies are not so important for image quality.

After you buy the D40 and the "kit" lens. Wait a while, until after you've shoot about 1,000 frames before you buy a second lens.
