Never Ender
Hey Guys,

My Mom's birthday is coming up and I decided that she really needs a new camera. I recently bought a Nikon D40X with I think a 55mm lens. My question is, my mom has an old Nikkor 35-105mm and I am wondering if this lens will work? (will it fit, will AF work, will anything work????)

Thanks guys!

Matt

There are four versions of the 35-105/3.5-4.5
One Ai-S, two AF and on AF-D version.

None of them will Autofocus on the D40(x).

The two AF and the AF-D version should Meter without problems.

You can look up a huge amount of information on: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html

Almost all F-Mount lenses will mount on the D40(x). Even those that are preAI (read: from 1959).
The ones you cannot mount are lenses that require Mirror-Lockup.

We just ran series of our own tests on it yesterday for sharpness, color, vignetting, IQ, and low-light capabilities. We decided to keep it.

It's quite a bit sharper than even our 1.8 (50mm) (vs. 50mm 2.8).

Easier to brighten a picture than sharpen it.

It might cost a bit, and the build quality isn't up to Nikon's standards, but we believe it's an awesome value for your money in image quality. Compared with the lens it is comparable to:

it's a steal.

This lens might be the most versatile (many, many people like it):

so it might work for her, but I've never used it and I prefer faster glass (shoot a great deal of low-light). The VR is supposedly 2 or 3 stops faster, but again, I've never used it with any lens other than the 70-200 w/ VR. Many people love this lens. It is somewhat pricey, but it does have vibration reduction (which works).

If you want to save a buck and she doesn't do a lot of low-light shooting:
look like a hero and get her this one, it's plenty sharp and we might pick one up ourselves for our 3rd body (some of our shoots are 2 photog shoots).

yes, the refurb should be fine. it's a great lens. recommend it for anyone who doesn't shoot a lot of low-light and wants a better lens for cheap.
