Nikon D750 vs. Sony a7

I've been debating this for some time now: whether to upgrade my d600 to a d750 or drop Nikon and go all Sony a7. Then...I was gifted the a7 yesterday. My gut is still telling me to go Nikon as that's the platform I'm invested in and I've been eyeing that 750 and 20mm 1.8 since they were announced.

I do a lot of travel/landscape photography so I really wanted to be able to update media via wifi/iphone on the go. Either can do that. I just think dedicating myself to one platform is the better choice as I don't do quite enough commercially to justify both. The Sony will always be the more versatile option, but I know I'll produce more high-end content with Nikon and my current lenses.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I may be easily swayed, but I'm nearly set on returning Sony for the 750 and 20mm 1.8G.

Depends on what Nikon stuff you already have. I'd review your glass and see what you really use, want to keep. Also isn't Sony's lens line up a bit more limited compared to Nikon?

I avoid Sony. Historically they try to make everything proprietary. It's only the newest high end bodies that let you use standard hot shoe flashes. Their memory stick screwed over a lot of people, though it's not an issue on their new high end stuff.

When I was taking courses, one person once had a Sony camera, he ended up buying a $300 adapter to use the school's pocket wizards that everyone else regardless of brand could use natively.

When you look across all their divisions (root kit CDs, HDCP, etc), I have never seen a company so hostile to their own customers.

So even though you can use a standard flash and memory now, who knows what other surprises there might be. Get a camera from a company that respects its customers.

Besides that, as a complete platform, Nikon has a lot more lenses and accessories available so if you do take photography far, you'll have to leave Sony eventually anyway.

I see a lot of people upgrading from the D600 to D750 because of the auto focusing. And the other bells and whistles are a plus too.

Personally I like this group on DSLR D90/D7100/D600/D750 etc because you have a lot of lenses to chose from. Like Oracle1729 said… lots of glass Both cameras will take a photo. I've had my D90 since it came out. That camera really impresses me whenever I use good glass. Whether its the old 28-70mm D f/2.8 or 24-70mm G f/2.8, I get some great images.


I've see what people on flickr have been doing with the 20mm and D750 #sweet.

Go with the D750 and enjoy it for the next 5 plus years.

Why do you think you need to upgrade? what are your needs?
the a7 is a downgrade from the D600 except for size and weight.

I would avoid selling the D600 and a7 atm because returns are not up to par and the d750 and d810 are still priced too high.

Was due to the terms of purchasing Minolta, when the clause ran out, they switched to a standard hot shoe

If you've been given an A7, simply keep your D600 & grab a Metabones adapter, you can then continue using & investing in your Nikon Glass - best of both worlds until you decide on your future path!!

Thanks for all the input! Some good advice in there certainly. I got a bit excited and went straight to the shop after work and made the trade. They weren't going to offer me much for the d600 so I'm trying Craigslist.

Anyway, I now have in front of me the d750 and attached a new 20mm 1.8G. While it may not be as sexy as the a7 and as practical as keeping the d600, it certainly is sweet and enough to have me running around shooting and sending the pics to my phone while on the go. I'm clearly a Millennial as instant gratification often perseveres.

The wifi and improved autofocus are enough on their own to justify.

Nothing like viewing photos out of a D750 on a luxurious phone screen ...

Nice! Honestly it's doing a great job of making me feel like it wasn't crazy to upgrade from the d600! The focus is incredible, the high-iso more usable and the wifi is fun. Not to mention the 20mm 1.8 is a great lens to pair it with for walkaround
