18-200

Ummmm a faster lens.

If on a strict budget then the 50 1.8 for $100 or the 35 1.8 for $200.

I like my 18-200, but it isn't a low light lens.

well ive got a buget of around 500.00 as was looking at the nikon 50mm f1.4...what do you think??

First, do you notice yourself shooting at a particular FL on the 18-200? Assuming your answer is yes...50mm-ish...then....

The Sigma 50mm is better than the Nikkor. Either though are capable of giving you significantly better results than the 18-200.

I have the D90 and the 18-200 and 50 1.8. On the D90 the 50mm is really like 72mm right? I find it reachy enough for most situations. It's a great lens and better than the 18-200 in low light for sure. I have not shot with the 50 1.4 but I can't see the extra money being worth it. I'm very happy with the 1.8. The 18-200 is a great lens but if I could afford a bag full of prime lenses that's what I'd have.

Is 50mm what you need? With your budget you could go for a 85mm 1.8 (I've got one and I like it a lot.) or if you really must have an even longer lens you can pick up a good used 80-200 f/2.8 for about $650.

f/2.8 gets you 4X faster shutter or 4X lower ISO, f/1.4 gets 16X. Huge difference from f/5.6 BUt the depth of feild will be very small at f/1.4 Can you handle that? When I say "small" I mean you will have to focus on the eyes, not just the person. You have to be very careful with focus at f/1.4

Nikon just came out with a new f/1.4 so you might find a good deal on a used, pervious version 50mm lens

I would just get the nifty fifty, aka the nikon 50mm 1.8, awesome lens and runs around $100 or less!

I would like to add the 50mm 1.8 is nice as I have it and the 18-200mm as well but it has been mentioned that the 85mm 1.8 is a nice lens and gets great praise from a bunch of people that have one. I like the 50mm for family parties or parties in general but the 85mm really has my interest as of late. Good luck with your next choice of a lens.
