Nikon Firmware Update

Currently having issue updating firmware on my Nikon D7100 DSLR. The problem is with the updated Lens Distortion upgrade (2.009 on Nikon USA site). I was able to download the camera firmware update, not issue. But, the lens distortion fails every time I attempt it with a message saying there is no software in the download. I have Macbook Pro with OS X 10.11.2 installed. I was on the phone with Nikon for about an hour this morning and they have no idea what the issue is. Was considering calling Apple Care,as this laptop is only about month old, but thought I'd give the forum a shot first. I'm not familiar with the D7100 but does it follow previous Nikon practice in that you place the firmware file on a memory card, place the card in the camera and install from there via the camera menu? If so how big is the file on the card? Do you have a choice of card slots to select the firmware location from?

When I download I get a 5.7MB file after openeing the .dmg file - you are doing that aren't you? Download, then open the .dmg file, then the firmware update is the file within.

Hi Simon, I can get as far as the .dmg file. Yes, the D7100 follows the path as other Nikons for updating. The problem I run into is after I place the SD card in the laptop slot, download the Nikon file, I can get as far as the S-DCDATA-209MF-ALLIN32Bit file. Once I try to open that and get the bin file level, I get the can't download as there is no software in the file message. Truly at a loss on tis with the MAC. I have been told that maybe I should try doing this on a Windows PC and them=n see if that works, but have not tried this yet. Funny thing is, if I open the 32bit file, I can see the other files loaded thee, so I know the software exists - just can't open it with my system. Sort of strange,

Don't download direct to the SD card, download to your downloads folder, then double-click to extract the firmware from the dmg, then copy the firmware to the SD card - does that work?

It extracts fine on my El Cap system so can't believe its anything fundamental...

Tried this again, per your suggestion, Simon. Did not work. I think what I may do is try downloading this to a windows system and see if that goes OK. Not sure why I am having an issue and you are not. I would not think the latest version of El Capitan is not congruent with the Nikon app, but who knows. You download the .dmg file, mount it and pull the xxxxx.bin file out. The .bin file needs to go into the ROOT folder on the SD card. (The camera cannot process the .dmg file.) Pop it into the camera (slot 1, if your camera has more than one)... then using the camera menu, navigate to Firmware and choose UPDATE. Bob's your uncle.

So, let me make sure I follow this, as it is totally different than downloading the other firmware update. I went back and downloaded the update again, got down to the folder level of the file where I see the bin folder. So I just move the bin folder to the root folder of the SD card? I can't seem to get just the .bin file, only the folder. When I open the folder, it reflects items from 2009. Thanks for the help dwfaust

I have a D7000, and firmware updates have always been done this way, AFAIK.

Yes, mount the .dmg file... then open the mounted drive in Finder. You should see a folder named D7100Update. Open that folder to see D7100_0103.bin. Copy THAT .bin file to a freshly formatted SD card... then put the SD card in the (first) card slot on your camera and use the camera menu to navigate to Firmware > Update.

What you are showing here looks like the firmware update for the 7100 going from v 1.02 to 1.03. Got that done, no problem. It is the other update for the Lens Distortion v2.009 that I am having issues with. When I open the bin folder for that, the D7100 does not show anywhere, as this is for lens. I am really beginning to wonder if it is really worth doing the upgrade as opposed to figuring out why I am having this issue I'll mess around with this some more on the Mac, then try my wife PC and see if that works. Wish Bob was my uncle today!

Have you tried just running the same process, moving the file into the root of the SD card and seeing if the camera finds it there?

I'm puzzled by your reference to "the Nikon app", this is all achieved by moving the files around to the right place on the card and letting the camera carry out the firmware upgrade, no software is required as such and certainly no Nikon app that is run.

So:

download dmg file
open dmg by double-clicking
drag the firmware file to the SD card root (or copy it and paste it into the SD card root folder)
Place card into camera
Follow the firmware upgrade process on the camera (haven't done it for a while)

Which step fails?

Simons - the failure occurs when I open the 32 bit file, S-DCDATA-002009MF-ALLIN-32BIT_.dmg. When I go to open this, to get to the .bin file, I get the message that there is no software in the file. I'm baffled.

Sorry... didn't realize that you were talking about a different type of update.

The S-DCDATA-002009MF-ALLIN-32BIT_.dmg file contains a OS X executable (S-DCDATA-002009MF-ALLIN-32BIT_.app) that must be run on your Mac. As with the firmware update, mount the .dmg file and then open it... then double click on the .app file to run it.

Since I've never updated a file like this before, I cannot advise past that point. Good luck.

Once you download that, run it, you should get a Gatekeeper warning that "it is a program downloaded from the internet...", choose to run it and it should run through its checks and setup.

I think Simon and I have beat this issue to death over the past few days. Everything tried failed to install the Lens Distortion update (v2.009) on my Nikon D7100 camera. Basically, could not install as nothing we did would either a) actually download the software, or b) allow the camera to recognize and install the update. Really disappointed that Nikon support had absolutely not idea as to how to resolve this issue. Thanks to Simon for his help and perseverance.

At any rate, if someone needs this file, Nikon can email you the correct .bin file for updating your Lens Distortion firmware.

Well at least you know it wasn't something you were doing! I'll have to check which version my D7100 is on.

So Nikon know that there is a problem with a firmware file but they have not fixed the download, you have to email them! Very poor customer service - the typical customer will not know that the problem is with the download as we have see here.
