You need to be using at least macOS 10.12.4 and move to the Photos app instead of using iPhoto.I recently took some photos in RAW format on my nikon D5600 and when I try to upload them to Iphoto its saying that file type isnt supported and they are unable to download. What can I do to resolve this problem?
iPhoto doesn't use the newer camera raw updates in Sierra, so the version of iPhoto being used is irrelevant. The Photos app is the only native Apple app which will be able to handle the D5600's raw files. You didn't tell us which version of the OS you're using.
The last version of iPhoto (9.6.1) was released in March 2015.
The d5600 is relatively new.
I'm guessing that the RAW files generated by the d5600 are "too new" for iPhoto to "digest" any more, particularly if you're using an older version of the Mac OS.
There may be "workarounds".
You realize that there's a dedicated sub-forum here for digital photography?
Also, you might visit the forums at dpreview.com as well.
iPhoto is a dead product and will never get updated. Apple has replaced it with Photos, which does support the D5600, if the computer is updated to Sierra 10.12.4.You can use Nikon software until Apple updates iPhoto. Make sure you also register your camera with Nikon. Go to their page and download the software. I can't remember if a copy comes in the box. I have to check and see if a copy is in my box.

I'm trying to think what I did when I had this problem? I can't remember but I think you could view your RAW files in Image Capture. You can also shoot RAW and Jpeg until (I think) until the update becomes available.
