Anyone started to trial this? Looks very feature rich and very cheap 😉

Currently MacOS only but iOS and iPadOS app is in beta testing

Is US$99.99 cheap (or US$29.99/year)? The price isn't much different from Silkypix. With Capture One Express being unavailable again, people looking for a reasonably-priced raw developer could find it very useful.

I've used Raw Power on my iPhone but not on my Mac. I tend to use software that works on macOS or Windows but I might give Nitro the trial to see if it's interesting.

If the DAM side is decent and standalone I may give it a try. This could be a legitimate LR replacement on a Mac. Sounds like it can run independent of Apple Photos in referenced mode.

what is the difference between Nitro and Raw Power? Is Raw Power going by the wayside and Nitro moving forward or are there differences? I see the new trend seems to be Lifetime does that just mean until an update comes along where they want to change the name as in Raw Power into Nitro?

I swear every time I turn on the computer I need to update to a new version - I wish these software engineers were sentenced to dealing with decades of files to understand why stability and longevity are more important than some new trendy dialog box

From what I've read it's a completely new code base that's been in development for the last 2 years. Edits from RAW Power can be imported into Nitro. I think I read RAW Power will be supported but only Nitro is in active development. There is a discount for RAW Power users.

I like stability and longevity, but software has a life cycle and sometimes you have to start from fresh using the latest frameworks etc..

yes I read that on his site after I made the comment and I do understand. Still I updated to Sonoma this morning only to find out my old software no longer works so instead of working on images I am once again looking for software. If the genie wasn't out of the bottle I would go back to film in a NY minute

I have read some reddit posts about the lack of keywording in Nitro.
Does anyone have more on that important aspect? Thanks

Reads Nikon Compressed RAW files. Yay. In testing, it does not seem that I can edit in Nitro and have it show in photos, despite using the photos library.

Nikon Compressed RAW with Photos.
Import into Photos where photos cannot read it.
Select Edit. Get the warning about can't Edit.
Select "Edit in Nitro"
Edit how you will.
Save
You can now view, and even edit, it Apple Photos.
HOWEVER, you cannot 'revert to original.' If fact, you cannot ever revert changes you make in Apple Photos after you complete the edit in Nitro. For example, you edit in Nitro and make the photo Black and white. You then save this and take it to Apple photos, where you notice an ugly spot. You retouch the ugly spot. Once you leave the edit screen, that retouch is permanent. If that ugly spot happens to be your ex, but you get back together, there is no bringing her back into the photo. It is permanently black and white and the ex is permanently gone. The revert button does not do anything at this point.

If you edit in photos and then try to edit in Nitro, you get a message that this photo was edited externally in another app, so you are only editing a jpeg made by that app. In order to edit the original, you must 'revert to original' in Apple Photos, which I have already explained does not work. I will notify Gentlemen Coders.

Gentlemen Coders got back with me and gave me this (and I am tempted to buy Nitro just on the quick response and good explanation)

Due to the way Macs work these days (in terms of security), it’s not really possible for a third party app like Nitro to modify the way Photos would work, or to add camera support to all apps on the system. So, Nikon support is limited to when you are using Nitro itself.

Because Nitro is fully non-destructive, it never modifies the original file. You can always revert to original. Normally, Photos Revert to Original will do this, but for completely unsupported images like Nikon HE, their Revert is broken (this actually used to work in Photos).

So, in that case, the best thing to do is Revert in the Nitro app itself. I ran your specific test cases as follows:

  1. Imported Nikon HE into Photos
  2. See blank thumbnail; go into Edit get an error
  3. Open Nitro Extension
  4. Make Black and White; Save
  5. Looks fine in Photos.
  6. Use Retouch in Photos
  7. Cannot Revert in Photos
  8. Go to Nitro (the app)
  9. Revert to Original - it works there
  10. Go back to Photos and there is a blank thumbnail, just like in Step 2.

If you edit in Nitro and then in Photos, you are working with either a JPEG that is created by Nitro. That is also true in reverse. If you edit in Photos and then in Nitro, then Nitro gets a JPEG. This is the way Apple has designed Photo Extensions.

So, unfortunately, because of bugs in Photos, you cannot revert in Photos if it’s an unsupported RAW image. However, your images are always safe, and you can revert in Nitro (the app).

I hope that helps.

Would anyone with Nitro, and more than one display mind checking what is meant by Nitro having multiple display support?

  • Is it a single window app, and it's the equivalent of having two copies of the app on screens at once, or is it more like Aperture / Capture One, where you could have your library of thumbnails one one screen, and the viewer of your fullsize images on another screen?
    • Does this behaviour change depending on the "Displays have separate spaces" setting in System Settings?
  • Do adjustment palettes tear off as free-floating windows?
Thanks.

I tried it with sidecar, and couldn't get it to work other than recognizing multiple monitors.
BUT, they have a full featured free trial so you can test your own use case.
