nMP - 1Tb Flash or External storage

I'm trying to decide weather it makes more sense to get the maximum internal flash storage on a nMP or purchase an external device. £640 seems like a good price for 1Tb and it seems like a simple solution for fast storage.

The machine will be mainly used for video editing. Most projects are not larger than 300Gb and it seems that I will I longer need to transcode formats like Red R3D before editing, so this might even go down. So maybe 1Tb will be enough for active jobs, the OS and applications. When jobs are finished they are archive to single drives anyway.

I be interested to know anyones thoughts and what they decided to do?

Absolutely go for the max size internal SSD. Why are you even asking this?

I really don't see a point in maxing out the internal ssd.

Since I bought a 2012 imac with fusion drive I didn't use more than 120 gb of the internal hd just to keep everything on the ssd. Instead I got a Promise Pegasus R6 12Tb wich will serve you well for active jobs as well as a long term storage solution for projects of the last year let's say.
If that tops out your budget just get a pegasus2 r4 with 8TB.

That way you can just keep everything at one place without having the constant hazzle of moving stuff from internal drive to external archive drives.. in the end you will have a ton of cheap and ugly usb 3 drives cramping your desk instead of one nice solution that you can keep stored away in a cupboard or so.

Internal flash is one of the easiest things to upgrade. Along with RAM it's officially supported by Apple, doesn't void your warranty, so if you don't absolutely need it right now I don't see the point in upgrading. Having said that the 512GB upgrade isn't too horribly priced, but I opted for the 256GB and will use external storage. Sometime down the road I'll upgrade the internal too probably.

Also, keep in mind that the internal storage is used for virtual memory.

True, it would seems difficult to fill even 12GB of RAM, but it's possible.

This, was one of the reasons I ordered mine with the 1TB SSD option. I do have a tendency to keep many programs open, and I plan to but Parallels on it.

I'm shopping around for a new system since 24 GiB is no longer workable....

Fortunately, I have a couple of 128 GiB systems at work that I can run the larger tasks on - so I can keep shopping.
