I am a long time mac user (and developer) going back to 1986 when I aquired a 514Ke. I currently use a MBA and MM on a daily basis along side an aging DELL XPS 630i PC that I want to replace with a nMP. I'm pretty sure I want the default hex core setup, but I wanted to ask your opinions given perhaps an odd use case.

Today, I really only use the PC for solid modeling in Solidworks and AutoDesk Inventor. I have known for a while that migration day was coming, so I run these applications using VMware Workstation 9. They run ok, but are far from snappy. However, at work on a modern XPS 8500 (i7-3770, 16MB, Radeon HD 7700) these VM's run fantastic and really can't be distinguished from native.

So, my hope is the nMP will perform equal to or better than my work XPS 8500. The hardware in the nMP seems to compare well, but I also have no experience with VMware Fusion and/or how it handles hardware accelleration. What do you think?

It should work just fine. The only thing VMWare probably won't be able to take advantage of is the second GPU, but you'll get one GPU and the six cores.

Thanks! I think it should work out quite well and I'll be PC free for the first time in decades.
