I received my long awaited nMP yesterday and after excitedly setting it up, I turned it on thinking that it would automatically pair to either my Magic Mouse or wireless track pad .... well that was my mistake. I frantically searched through all our boxes of old computer stuff (everyone has these, right ?) and could not find a plug in mouse anywhere ! Eventually I figured it out, but it was a bit frustrating. Probably most people know all of the keyboard short cuts, but I did not

That's strange, mine paired to both my BT keyboard and Magic Mouse upon initial startup.

Same experience here, my nMP saw my wireless trackpad and keyboard NO PROBLEM. My guess - both your keyboard and mouse were paired with another device that was still running....

You do not need a USB mouse or keyboard... Thread title is not accurate.

I am glad others didn't have the same problem. I had a usb keyboard so I was good there. The mouse and trackpad had previously been paired to my laptop, but I had made sure to turn both mouse and TP off and shut the laptop down. I turned on the mouse and pushed the button on the trackpad and then I booted the nMP for the first time, but was never prompted about bluetooth pairing and my devices definitely did not pair with the nMP until I was able to access the mouse prefs. At one point I even took batteries out of TP.

In the interest of education, what did I do incorrectly ?

Both my magic mouse and keyboard were paired with another computer when my nMP showed up yesterday.

For the keyboard I held the power button in until it turned off - then pressed and held it again until it started blinking. The nMP found it and asked me to type in a some numbers and enter. Done.

For the mouse I think I turned it off and removed the batteries. Put the batteries back in and turned it on. Then I clicked it and held it down for a while until the computer found it too.

At least that's what I remember from Friday - but that was a solid 30 hours ago!

(I'm less positive about the mouse to be honest)

Sounds like I was just due for some bad luck. Anyways, good to know that for others it worked as it was supposed to. A minor problem in the end.

You've got to unpair them. Even if you turn everything off they are still keyed to only work with your laptop.

On the keyboard, you can force an unpair by holding down the power button. Not sure about the mouse.

Trying to pair a bt keyboard and nMP right now. Cant get through the initial startup to connect the keyboard, and the nMP didnt recognize it right off the bat. Previously used the keyboard with my mbp and mac mini but unpaired both of them of course. Super frustrating. Dont have a usb keyboard on hand atm but that would solve everything, luckily i at least have a usb mouse. Anyways, back to googling a solution.

Fixed it.

"Just in case anyone else has a similar probelm... I bought a used mac mini and did not get any kind of keyboard or mouse setup dialogue during the first boot setup. Luckily I had a USB mouse handy. If you don't get any option to pair a keyboard, click through the setup until you get to the "Create Your Computer Account" screen, right click in any of the text fields and select Substitutions --> Show Substitutions. From there click on text preferences. The preferences pane will popup and from there you can just click the back button (next to show all) to get to the full preferences menu. Next click on keyboard, then select setup bluetooth keyboard and you're golden. Saved me a trip to best buy for a keyboard I'd likely never use again. "
