nMP Mineral Oil Cooling

Hello World!

Got a dumb question ...

I am still running nMP as a general office machine along side with my PC water cooled gaming rig which recently received and SLI 1080 ti upgrade

As soon as I find suitable PC Laptop replacement (which will likely be when stable core i9 laptops shows up, hopefully with 1080 ti as well ) I am planning to dump anything apple related all together and switch to PC as the only platform (unless miracle happens)

Which will leave me with nMP that I probably won't be able to sell for anything meaningful

So here is the questions,

What would happen if I remove the enclosure of nMP and put it into a bucket filled with mineral oil?

I don't remember seeing any rubber inside,

If this is at all possible?

(Question Why isn't really an appropriate here)

Am I bored ...

The fans will not like it and due to slowing down in liquid it might refuse to boot at all (SMC).

In theory it works, practically will need mods.

Well, initially, it won’t boot. The locking mechanism on the side needs to register as closed before the machine POSTs, so you’d have to jury-rig that.

After that, the fan might be unhappy; SMC controllers usually know what speed it should run at, so it would force the fan to ramp up to the speed it should be at on air, even though it’s actually in liquid. Might damage or burn the fan out.

Finally, in a mineral oil PC things can get pretty hot pretty quickly. It’s also probably not a great design for this, based off of a smal surface area to dissipate the heat from. Thus, you’d possibly be better off having fans above and below the thermal core to aid the movement of liquid through the system.

Also for day to day use, you’d be better off suspending it with the ports above the surface, as turning it on would be difficult.

Ultimately, probably not worth it.

You can stick a magnet to the side next to the case switch to trick the machine to think the case is on
