I have not been really following up on the nMP news or this forum (but my rudimentary search for 5k on this forum does not reveal whether this has been discussed) - so starting this thread.

It looks like now the nMP supports 5k monitors:

http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

Under display support it says connect up to three 5k monitors or 6 Thunderbolt displays. So I assume three 5k monitors means it will take up 2 Thunderbolt ports for a 5k monitor.

I have the stock 6 core nMP ($4k - got last Thanksgiving for $3500 at B&H) - since there has been no nMP update I assume the information on Apple's website is valid for my machine as well. I was wondering if it would work with one of these 5k monitors (Dell UP2715k, HP Z27q ):

Anyone used them with nMP?

No hurry on my side & will wait for the prices to come down (may be even next year) or 32 inch 5k monitors - as I already have a 4k monitor. However those extra pixels on the monitor sure can come handy for photo editing.

I have a Dell Up2715k (27 inch 5k 60hz) and it works with my nMP.
It uses 2 display port cables for 5k operation so yes - two thunderbolt ports will be used.
It can also be run with only one cable, but then max resolution is limited to 4k (60hz).

Thanks Mikael. Is the picture smooth and not jerky?

I think it's exactly the same panel as in the Imac 5k - so yes it has an extremely good picture quality and it is perfectly smooth in Yosemite. I recently installed the Il Capitan GM candidate and I have zero lag whatsoever also now. All in all I am very happy and it is a major step up from the Apple 27inch display.

One major drawback is:
- As it is an MST screen there is around 10 secs delay upon changing screen resolution - and also starting from sleep introduces this delay.
