nMP owners- can you justify an upgrade to the cheesegrater 2.0?

Hey,

I own a fully specked nMP 8 core from day 1 for my editing/motion graphics freelance business.
Of course I’m super excited about the new machine, though I kinda feel I’ll have a hard time to really justify the purchase, since on SO many jobs, I just get booked by agencies and forced to work on their (crappy) workstations, letting my Mac Pro collect dust.
I wish I could get the new monster later this year in a 12 core version with better GPU, TB3 and the perspective to be future proof for the next 10 years. One other reason for me for an upgrade is, I’m sporting two dell 5k displays and the interface in several apps like after effects or Lightroom can become pretty sluggish with the current gpu power on my machine.

But other than that, with actual rendering speeds or editing, I’m absolutely fine right now..

How are you looking at it, what do you expect to get as resale value for the trash can and how do you justify the expenditure?

Too expensive for some of us. Probably in 5 years time,we'll be able to afford a used one on eBay.

From a business perspective. It is only a justifiable expenditure if one can make more money with it than without it or it is necessary to remain competitive. Time is money after all.

In your example. It does not sound economically justifiable. You currently do not get enough work for your current MP to necessitate a new one. All it may do is give you more free time an a pleasant user experience. As you can get projects done quicker and have a smoother user interface.

Hell yeah, at least for the warranty/Apple Care and OS updates (suddenly the 6,1 feels very very old). That being said I think I can stretch the 6,1 until refurbs are available.

My eyes don't really agree with wide monitors (I previously had a 31" LG) so I'm not sure I"ll go for the monitor but maybe if it feels right to use I'm sure I'll want it.
