Speaking of nMP shipments . . .

This morning, I dutifully checked the status on my nMP order (hex/16GB/1TB/D700), and it said, as it has for weeks, "Processing . . . Ships January." I thought, what do I have to lose by calling and asking if an Apple Store agent might be able to give me more information? Maybe they know internally that these units won't ship until February, maybe I can get them to toss me a crumb . . .

So I called, and spoke with a very nice agent. She told me that as far as she knew, Apple was committed to getting those units out, ones promised to ship in January, by the end of January. I then asked, does she know from what location my unit might be shipped? I mentioned offhandedly that I know they're assembled in Texas, and if it's shipping from here then I won't ask to change to faster shipping, but maybe I will if it's coming from somewhere else. She then offered to upgrade me to Next Day Air shipping at no charge. I thanked her.

I just got back to my desk and noticed an email from the Apple Store. My order has shipped, overnight, and will be here tomorrow. Nice!

So orders might spend very little time, like hours or less, in the Preparing phase. And calling and not ranting can get you a little Apple TLC in the form of free fast shipping.

My personal experience (including with the nMP) is that an order will flip to "preparing for shipment" sometime during daytime hours and fill then flip to "shipped" overnight.

This is how mine shipped:

1/15/2014 - Wednesday

8:33 pm
Picked up
AUSTIN, TX

9:18 pm
Left FedEx origin facility

11:57 pm
Arrived at FedEx location
MEMPHIS, TN

- 1/16/2014

4:41 am
Departed FedEx location

11:11 am
In transit
WINNIPEG, MB

1/17/2014 - Friday

2:43 am
At destination sort facility
MISSISSAUGA, ON

8:50 am
At local FedEx facility
TORONTO, ON

9:16 am
On FedEx vehicle for delivery

10:24 am
Delivery exception
TORONTO, ON
Customer not available or business closed (I was out of town, but this is when it would have been delivered)

In practice there's little or no difference between standard and express shipping from Apple.

Congrats. When in December did you order it?

I am in the "ships in February" bracket, so I think I still have a long haul.

You would think Fed Ex would take a cog out of the wheel and go direct from Memphis to Toronto rather than Winnipeg. My brother is a pilot for FedEx and flys this route all the time.

Congrats on your new Mac Pro and go Leafs eh!

I ordered December 19th, must have been relatively early in the day.

And yes, the Apple agent was incorrect as far as the point of origin for the shipping: mine is also coming from Austin, a scant 180 miles away. Regular shipping would have been overnight as well, but oh well.

I guess now mine will get to see Graceland before arriving tomorrow, unless by some miracle FedEx sends it directly here from Austin.

Heck, I could drive there and get it faster. :)

Thanks - I'm sure there are logistical reasons. At a guess, it's because Toronto is the busiest airport in the country and if something isn't sent overnight it makes more sense to ship to a regional hub and go out across the country from there.
