nMP with 256gb... how much space left

As title.... How much space is left on a 256gb drive with just the OS on it? like as it arrives

wondering whether to upgrade to 512gb drive...

Plan on getting the 6core along with the new LaCie 6TB TB2 to store all content and use BackBlaze as cloud backup.

I just run PS6 with a few plug ins, InD6 and MSWord and Excel along with some small everyday stuff apps.

You've have well north of 150GB, possibly up to 200GB based on your description. You probably won't need or use that 512GB if you're storing content on a DAS (and that DAS is getting backed up, which if you're using Backblaze seems covered.)

In my opinion, 256GB is not enough.

For me, I purchased the 1TB. By the time I installed all my software (some of it is large music software with libraries), I'm up around half full already.

I keep all of my data externally (music, photos, etc.).

512GB should be fine for most people I think

A new Mac with the OS and iLife and iWorks apps installed will use about 20GB of disk space, so you would have around 230GB free.

Nobody can tell you how large a disk you need without knowing your storage needs. It really depends on how much data you plan to keep on there.

I have a 128GB Air and that is plenty of space for me.

IMHO to buy the 256 GB is saving in the wrong place.
Even if initially it might be enough, every user knows that there is not a drive TOO LARGE if one takes in consideration future use.
You can begin with little RAM and upgrade later, but regarding the ONLY inner drive of the nMP you remain with what you bought.
So better more free space than not enough

It is my opinion that you do not want to run an SSD in excess of 60% of it's capacity due to GC and TRIM routines.

Some people couldn't wait for a custom-build model, or got a special deal on a nMP (in my case - stock 6-core 16GB RAM/256GB SSD - $3600 and no tax). I don't think it's that bad. External storage is getting faster and cheaper everyday. That being said, if you're in the market now, go ahead and get the 1TB internal SSD since the wait times are not crazy like they used to be.

I bought the standard channel configuration (6c/16RAM/256SSD/D500).

If I had a choice I would have gone with the 1TB SSD (probably 8c too), but sadly I had to buy a standard configuration in the store.

I swapped the 256GB SSD with the 512GB SSD on my MacBook Air.

What I have found since I expected not to have enough space, I've been storing most of my stuff on external drives from the get go. For main storage I'm using a Promise Pegasus J4 with 2x SSDs striped and two 1.5TB HDDs mirrored. For backup I have a separate USB 3.0 drive. So far with all the programs I need installed I'm using about 75GB only.

So if your mindset is you don't have a lot of space and you use external storage, perhaps 256GB is sufficient.

Truth. After seeing the power of the nMP, I think I could have even gotten by just fine with the base 4 core 3.7. I use mostly audio software and it's a beast. My old Mac Pro tower and even my PPC Mac Pro tan logic and ableton really well. At least I think this one can last me a good 6-7 years though without having the itch to update,

My 6-core stock (so 256gb) arrives tomorrow. I couldn't wait or afford more storage, nor do I really need it. Especially since the internal ssd is incredibly easy to exchange, and external options are faster and cheaper by the day.

I will post an out-of-the-box screenshot of the storage usage and another one after I installed all my apps!

It could also be useful to perform disk speed tests with it out of the god and compare it to how it performs with all you want installed and disk space used.

Now the results after I installed everything I wanted (including FCP X, Motion, Compressor, Adobe CC, Cinema 4D, VLC, etc)

I still have plenty of room left and the results actually improved (quite insignificantly, but still)

Boot Time: 12 seconds
Restart: 18 seconds

Are you sure? I’ve yet to see one place supplying SSDs for these units due to the shape and interface. RAM yes, SSD no.

I'm sure it's easy to exchange and since a lot of people had to buy the stock version my guess is, like me, they will want to expand the SSD and usually where there is demand, supply is met! So let's hope we start seeing them soon.

For me, the 256 is perfect. My user is on an external RAID box, and i keep just the one dormant user within the nMP. That means that i have:
44 Gb used
206 Gb free
(Apps installed include x4 Adobe CCs, FCPX + motion & others.
Interestingly iphoto imovie and garageband come to nearly 5 of those 44Gb.)

Yeah no kidding. I can hold out pretty well, until a new design hits. That's my weakness and I know it, lol. Hopefully they don't change the design for 6 years.
