No audio from Apple TV using HDMI cable

I'm a complete beginner with home theater. I just bough an ATV, Pioneer RX-V371 receiver and Polk RM 705 5.1 speaker system.

I've connected the ATV to the #1 HDMI port on the Yamaha receiver, and the HDMI out from the receiver to the TV.

The picture from the ATV displays on the TV (I can see the interface, menus, play videos, etc.) but there is no sound.

I downloaded the manual for the receiver but cannot figure out how to get sound from the receiver/speakers with the ATV connected as it is.

Please help!

My guess is, you bought a receiver that does not transfer sound through the HDMI. I've made the same mistake. Get an optical cable and play the sound that way.

Actually, the audio works fine when watching movies.

It doesn't work with playing music. Should I expect it to? Or is HDMI only for videos? Maybe I need an optical cable going from the ATV to the receiver to listen to music?

And how are you playing music? From iTunes through your ATV2? Have you selected the ATV as the speaker output in iTunes?

Sorry, should have been more clear. Trying to play music from ATV using iCloud. I have an HDMI cable from ATV to receiver and another from receiver to TV. Not sure if that's enough to play music from ATV, or whether I'd need an optical cable from ATV to receiver as well.

When you stated that you have audio while playing movies, were you playing movies from the Cloud?

If you have audio when playing movies (using iCloud), you should have it when playing music using iCloud with the same connection setup.

Hmmm. Yes, I was playing movies from iCloud - and that worked fine. But there was no audio when I tried to play music from iCloud.

I don't use iTunes Match, so I'm afraid I can't offer any more suggestions since I do not play music from the cloud.

The only thing I can think of is that the movies may be encoded with 5.1 Audio, and the music would not be. Maybe you have an issue with your receiver or Apple TV settings that is causing it to have issues with Stereo Audio and NOT with 5.1.

How many speakers to you have hooked up to your receiver?

Any chance you have only the center channel hooked up? This would give you sound when watching 5.1 movies, but nothing when watching Stereo, which would use only the Left and Right speakers...

I have a Philips tv and a Yamaha receiver. When the atv is plugged in to the receiver via hdmi, everything is fine. When atv is plugged straight onto the tv via hdmi, audio is temperamental. I found that going into the atv settings and telling it to use 16bit (instead of 32) audio resolved this for me.

That shouldn't matter. So, obviously you shouldn't be having this problem, but since you are, we might as well try to be helpful, right?

I would check to see if there is a firmware update to your Yamaha receiver, because sometimes bug fixes that occur in shipping products are addressed in those, and can possibly remedy your situation. Are you familiar with downloading and running firmware updates?

Also, I'd check in your audio options on your ATV2, and make sure both "Dolby Digital" and "Audio Output" are set to "Auto", because I've found out the hard way that setting them otherwise can introduce problems, even though I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought forcing everything to output Dolby Digital would be a good thing, right?
