iPod No audio output from iPod video 30GB

I was driving one day with my 30GB iPod video hooked up to the cassette tape car adapter when I heard a screeching sound and the stereo went silent. The adapter still functions with other iPods (it attaches into the audio jack), the headphones I currently use work on other iPods, and when I connect my iPod to a car adapter or speaker system through the (forgive me for blanking) thing on the bottom of the iPod, it won’t play music. It will still charge, and the iPod displays that it’s playing music, but no sound.

So what would cause the audio jack and the bottom port to stop fuctioning? And how can I fix it? Much appreciated.

From your post, I'd say the adaptor, the dock and the headphones work perfectly well, your problem seems to be the iPod itself, and quite possibly the battery, or HD. Either way, take it to an Apple store to check it out. A lot may depend on the age of the iPod, but I'm not sure that they are designed to last much longer than three years, maybe four years.

For my part, I have had a few 30GB iPods. The first two died while still under warranty - one lasted barely six weeks and I had hardly used it - and were replaced without a murmur by Apple (which was one of the reasons I switched to Mac computers). Battery life and faulty batteries were a problem with that particular line of iPods. My third 30GB spluttered to a halt this April, having lasted two and a half years of quite heavy use. One thing I will caution about and that is leaving the iPod sitting in the dock when you are not plaing it, as this seriously shortens battery life.
