no audio with Final Cut HD

After capturing the media clips in Final Cut and placing them on the Timeline the audio does not play even though the wave form is present. The audio tracks are both turned on and the audio meter moves in synch with the wave form when playing either on the Timeline or in the Capture window. The Audio tab in the Capture window shows a wave form but produces no sound when the Capture window media is played.
